As a Security Operations Section Lead, you will ensure that City of Calgary staff, property and information are provided appropriate protection measures through the hiring, training, deployment, and leadership of security operations staff. You will also manage budget and resources such as fleet acquisition and management, training approvals, and overtime use and approval. Primary duties include:

  • Lead the Corporate Security Operations teams of Sergeants and Security Guards to deliver services to The City of Calgary¿s Business Units while continuing to implement best practices.
  • Develop and foster a positive work culture in line with City and Corporate Security values.
  • Direct, oversee and engage employees to ensure they have the skills, tools and capabilities necessary to deliver excellent service.
  • Monitor work status and progress of staff, inspect completed outcomes to ensure management and service user expectations are met.
  • Conduct the hiring and onboarding of new staff and ensure that necessary skills and qualifications are obtained upon hiring and maintained over time.
  • Review security and emergency incidents and actions taken by subordinates.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of policies and procedures that staff and contractors are expected to follow in any given situation.
  • Manage a fleet of patrol vehicles and equipment.
  • Supervise and direct the creation of security operations plans for special events and oversee their implementation.
  • Ensure all environmental, health and safety policies, standards, processes, and procedures are followed and consistently applied.
  • Manage assigned projects from inception to completion.
  • Manage external security contract service providers and corporate resources efficiently.
  • Provide direction and change management leadership support executing projects, initiatives, and process improvements.
  • Work with Security Operations customers to identify future needs and develop plans to address those needs.

Qualifications

  • A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) and at least 10 years of security experience in a supervisory or management role, OR;
  • A completed 2 year Diploma in Security Management, Criminology, Emergency Management or Police Studies and at least 7 years of security experience in a supervisory or management role, OR;
  • A degree in Criminology, Emergency Management or other relevant field and at least 5 years of security experience in a supervisory or management role.
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
  • An Alberta Security Services License is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits or Graduated Driver's License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Current Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Level 'C' and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification.
  • Certification as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) will be considered an asset.
  • Success in this position requires strong leadership, coaching and communication skills, strong customer focus, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Business Unit: Corporate Security

Union: Exempt

Position Type: 2 Permanent

Compensation: Level M1 $115,627 - 144,534 per annum

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.

Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.

Location: 323 7 Avenue SE
