Applications are invited for the position of Clinical Lead Nurse Practitioner in the Integrated Student Health Division, located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus AND Welland Campus. The salary range is $125,153 to $156,441 for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Integrated Student Health, the Clinical Lead, Nurse Practitioner leads an interdisciplinary team comprised of Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and administrative staff within a model of community-integrated stepped care. As the clinical lead for the college’s health clinics, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for ensuring the quality and delivery of the full scope of primary care services to Niagara College students, and collaborates with college leaders to advance equity, support student wellbeing, and health care initiatives across the student life cycle. The Clinical Lead ensures that all services and programs provided are of the highest quality and are delivered within the context of legislation and governance by the College of Nurses and the College of Registered Psychotherapists. The Clinical Lead may also provide clinical care to students in meeting their healthcare needs.
While providing leadership to health care staff in the campus clinics, the Clinical Lead works collaboratively with the Director of Counselling to ensure that health care centre operations adhere to leading post-secondary practices for healthcare and counselling, align with best practices in health care information management and legislation, and respond to emerging issues in a manner reflective of evidence-informed, patient-centred care. The incumbent leads a student-focused team committed to ongoing evaluation of student health care needs, strengthening relationships with Family Health Teams and community-based partners, and fostering a sustained culture of excellence and quality improvement.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provides clinical leadership to nurses and manage the front-line health clinic administrative team
- Ensures the quality and delivery of the full scope of primary care services for students in accordance with legislation and regulatory college standards
- Collaborates with college and community members in assessing student health promotion and illness prevention needs and supports the development of health promotion programs on campus
- Coordinates and actions community, public health, and primary care referrals
- Oversees the Communicable Disease Surveillance service for college academic programs
- Engages in ongoing evaluation of student health care needs and emerging issues
- Strengthens partnerships with Family Health Teams and community-based healthcare providers
- Actively participates and provides consultation with campus and community health providers in the student’s circle-of-care which may include Physicians, RPNs, RNs, Counsellors, and other allied health professionals (e.g. physiotherapists, sports medicine doctor)
- Contributes to the overall health and well-being of Niagara College students through leadership, collaboration, and continuous quality improvement
- Performs comprehensive health assessments including health history and physical examinations using a holistic framework and multiple clinical assessment techniques relevant to a student’s stage of development and culture.
- Assesses client presentation, evaluate urgency of care needed, select appropriate level of care, facilitate referrals to other providers where appropriate, and determine follow-up required
- Determines the need, orders, and interprets the results of relevant screening and diagnostic tests
- Reviews and act upon all medical test results and reports in a timely and professional manner
- Issues and oversees medical directives
- Selects and prescribes drugs and other therapies, including non-pharmacological interventions, within the scope of practice
- Counsels clients on drug therapy, side effects and interactions
- Ensures accurate charting, documentation, and adherence to privacy legislation and best practices
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Nursing and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Primary Health Care
- Certification and member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner), and membership of the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario (NPAO)
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience working in health care leadership, including as primary care Nurse Practitioner (NP), supporting clients with complex needs, and supervision of other clinical staff
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and student populations
- Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practices
- History of actioned understanding of Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Being and Doing
- Experience working with communities historically underserved by public health care, including students from Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients in a non-judgmental manner that can be effectively understood – practicing active listening skills to understand client needs and coaching of clients as collaborative partners in their health care
- Performs to maximum scope of practice and recognizes acuity/presentations beyond scope
