About the role

Our client is searching for an individual to fill the following CTO role.

Reporting directly to the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Technology Officer is a full-time executive role and a key member of the senior leadership team.

As CTO you will own the complete technology vision and execution for a regulated Canadian securities marketplace, operating multiple order books. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines deep capital-markets technology expertise with strategic oversight of a mission-critical, low-latency, high-availability trading and market-data environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Define and drive long-term technology strategy and roadmap in alignment with business, regulatory, and competitive objectives

  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new systems, infrastructure, and emerging technologies that deliver measurable competitive advantage

  • Oversee the full technology stack (matching engine, order routing, market data distribution, clearing connectivity, disaster recovery, cloud strategy, and cyber security) to ensure operational resiliency, ultra-low latency, efficiency, and regulatory compliance

  • Build and enforce rigorous quality assurance, data protection, and change-management processes

  • Own IT budgeting, KPIs, capacity planning, and vendor relationships

  • Act as the primary technology liaison with regulators (OSC, CIRO), partners, dealers, and investors; clearly articulate technology strategy and risk posture

  • Attract, develop, and retain a high-performing technology team; foster a culture of ownership, innovation, and operational excellence

  • Serve as a core member of the executive team, ensuring all strategic initiatives are fully supported by scalable, secure, and compliant technology

  • Accept additional duties or responsibilities as reasonably assigned by the CEO in response to business or economic circumstances

    Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years in senior technology leadership roles within capital markets; experience at a recognized exchange, ATS, dark pool, or low-latency trading operation is strongly preferred

  • Proven track record running mission-critical, regulatory-facing trading infrastructure (equities and/or fixed income)

  • Deep expertise in high-performance, low-latency systems, resilient infrastructure, and modern cyber-security practices in a regulated environment

  • Demonstrated ability to balance innovation with the rigorous demands of regulatory compliance and audit requirements

  • Experience in leading cloud migration and hybrid strategies while maintaining exchange-grade resiliency and latency

  • Strong commercial acumen - able to align technology investments with revenue growth and cost discipline

  • Exceptional communication skills - comfortable presenting to regulators, boards, institutional clients, and industry working groups

  • Experience building and scaling engineering teams in the Canadian financial technology space

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
