Position Information The Substance Use Program is a new patient-centered addiction medicine consultation team. The service will be guided by published protocols, quality standards, and best practice documents, including those on initiation of opioid agonist therapy (OAT), harm reduction practices, management of opioid and alcohol withdrawal, safety measures for IV antibiotic therapy, acute pain control and pathways to community care.

The incumbent of this position will be required to work at both the General and Civic Campus.

Rotation/Shifts Days and evenings, including weekends, 8 hour shifts.

Basic Requirements

  • Certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a consult nurse;
  • Member of the Registered Nurse's Association of Ontario;
  • Minimum of three (3) years recent nursing experience in acute care setting;
  • Demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge and expertise in substance use treatment and/or harm reduction;
  • Ability to function effectively both independently and as a team member in a work environment requiring precision, accuracy, quick response and collaborative approaches;
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills;
  • Demonstrates initiative, interest and ability to participate in continuing quality improvement and support research studies;
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuing professional education and willingness to actively participate in education activities;
  • Demonstrates a desire and an ability to provide patient teaching and assist with the education of Substance Use Program learners;
  • Knowledge of computers including MS Office
  • Ability to learn and apply hospital policy and procedures, relative legislation, collective agreements, Canadian Hospital Accreditation Standards, Professional Disciplines Standards for Ontario.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing;
  • Recent experience with Addictions Medicine modalities within the last 3 years;
  • Proficiency in English and French ¿ oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
