What you'll do

Our Division has an exciting opportunity for a Distribution Engineering Team Lead for Projects. This technical leadership

role is ideal for someone with a passion for building strong teams and fostering collaborative relationships with stakeholders

involved in delivering and maintaining distribution assets across the province.

Reporting to the Distribution Engineering Division Manager, the Engineering Team Lead will guide and support a team of

professionals within the Division. The successful candidate will be accountable for delivering high quality technical

engineering support for capital projects and Major Distribution Customer projects throughout the province.

Working closely with internal and external partners—including other Engineering teams, Distribution Design, Asset

Planning, Interconnections, Project Delivery, Operations, and External Service Providers—the Team Lead will provide a

safe, inclusive, and high performing workplace. This role includes both people leadership and technical oversight, with key

responsibilities that include:

  • Provide leadership, support and advice to team members, encourage their work initiative, and help them grow as

engineers and technical leaders.

  • Be a leader in working safely and efficiently. Demonstrate strong commitment to safety and create a safety culture where

safety is first, and employees are recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work

practices.

  • Provide technical leadership and act as an expert technical resource responsible for providing professional/technical

advice in engineering and projects within and outside the department. Prepare or review technical reports, presentations,

standards, specifications, guides, or other such documents that provide engineering expertise.

  • Ensure that qualified internal and external resources are available and have the required expertise and tools to optimally

meet work plans. Allocate resources to various projects within the work program; assign and coordinate work, and provide

instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers, project, technical and administrative staff. Develop staffing

strategy and recruit, select, and promote staff, and/or procure consulting services. Develop and implement an employee

development program in order to maintain/cultivate the required expertise. Foster collaboration and knowledge transfer,

coaching and mentoring, and organizational awareness. Facilitate the development of employee soft skills including

persuasive influence, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

  • Lead by example by demonstrating BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful and inclusive workforce.
  • Advocate for professional practice and ensure team members are knowledgeable about professional practice

requirements and their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.

  • Establish review procedures, technical and quality assurance standards. Review, enhance and develop methods,

procedures and technical standards to take advantage of new technology.

  • Proactively undertake and/or significantly contribute to problem identification, risk mitigation, and the development of

customized solutions to complex engineering problems considering value, benefit, and risk to BC Hydro.

  • Act as a positive role model for the business fostering team work and engagement of team members to contribute to

achieving the company goals.

  • Support the Division Manager on various initiatives. The team lead may support Company-wide initiatives and be an

active part in developing those initiatives.

  • Ensure team adherence to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices and procedures.
  • Coach and mentor team members to investigate and analyze challenging or unusual technical problems, evaluate risks

and develop solutions to problems.

  • Assist in the development of business unit objectives, quality assurance standards, customer needs, and performance

measurements and assist in managing the technical and operational performance of the unit to meet these objectives and

client servicing needs.

  • Manage the team performance to meet objectives.
  • Improve department effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Build and maintain effective internal and external relationships with stakeholders and clients.
  • Chair meetings to address engineering problems, attend and address seminars, courses, meetings, and conferences.
  • Participate in the Public Consultation process and may be required to make presentations.

What you bring

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably Power Engineering) recognized by Canadian

Universities.

  • 10+ years progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the transmission and distribution utility business

particularly in the design, engineering and maintenance of distribution lines at or below 35kV, including design standards,

emergency response, technical report writing, and the ability to undertake technical design reviews.

  • Registered in good standing, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and

Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). The individual shall be proficient with EGBC quality management guidelines,

continuing education requirements and code of ethics.

  • Demonstrated strong relationship management and team building capability.
  • Demonstrated initiative in identifying, pursuing and championing process improvements and other business initiatives.
  • Demonstrated conflict management, coaching/mentoring, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking, leadership, and business planning skills.
  • Successful, creative, and persistent approach to influencing outcomes and meeting objectives.
  • Good command of both written and oral English combined with strong communication, technical writing and presentation

skills.

  • Good understanding of project management processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a group of people in various locations.
  • Demonstrated values of safety, teamwork, service, integrity, accountability and ingenuity.
  • A clear communicator comfortable with making presentations to peers and senior management.

  • The successful candidate will be required to travel to remote locations for both emergency response and regular

distribution project work or technical support.

  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing.
