See it differently

You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.

Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates to help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.

We are looking for a Fluids Analyst with a keen interest in computational fluid dynamics modelling and wind engineering to join our team. This position will be with the Specialist Technology, Analytics and Research (STAR) team in Toronto, ON, a center of excellence for technical innovation in the built environment. We employ cutting edge technologies and methods to advance Arup into new markets which usher in a safer, healthier, sustainable, and resilient future. We are a multi-disciplinary team with deep technical expertise and a passion for increasing the resilience of communities. Our team’s expertise is centered on the assessment of how large scale and long-term climatic factors translate to human scale impacts in the built environment. A large proportion of our work focusses on the design of urban spaces to improve livability and assessment of wind impacts on structures. However, we also use our core skills to support Arup in a diverse range of areas, such as the control of indoor thermal environments and the design of hydraulic structures, modelling the dispersion of pollutants, and assessing the impact of train slipstreams. Our team has expertise in structural dynamics, stress analysis, wind engineering, and fluid mechanics and heat transfer.

The Opportunity

  • Use analytical and numerical methods such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and dynamic thermal modelling to solve our clients’ most difficult challenges.
  • Perform and report wind engineering studies to determine structural wind loads, pedestrian comfort, urban heat island, and microclimate characteristics.
  • Conduct studies to understand the risk posed by natural hazards and the physical threat of climate change.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and consultants on innovative buildings and infrastructure projects.
  • Work on defined tasks under the supervision of a senior engineer.

We encourage candidates who have interest/proficiency in any of the following:

  • Computational fluid dynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Wind engineering and pedestrian wind comfort
  • Building physics and microclimate analysis

Is this role right for you?

Required

  • Minimum of a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering, with an emphasis on fluid mechanics or wind engineering.
  • Fundamental knowledge of fluid mechanics.
  • Basic understanding of computer programming and/or coding experience.
  • Interest in the built environment and the design of sustainable infrastructure.

Preferred

  • Cover letter included in application submission.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • A master’s degree or PhD in engineering is desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency in OpenFOAM and/or Ansys computational fluid dynamics software.
  • Experience or familiarity with the built environment, i.e. buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil infrastructure.

We’re looking for:

  • Recent and soon-to-be graduates: Whether you’ve just graduated or are graduating before the role starts, we want to hear from you if your degree is in a relevant field.
  • Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.
  • Innovative minds: We’re looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.
  • Growth seekers: You have a growth mindset, always eager to learn and explore new ways of working.
  • Adaptable adventurers: You’re ready to take on any challenge that comes your way.
