Business Development 19: Salaries typically range from $112,006 to $149,341 annually, based on qualifications and experiences, plus a performance-based incentive.

Location

  • Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, with a current requirement of two in-office days per week, increasing to three days per week in September 2026 (subject to change)
  • This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs in Toronto, Mississauga, Montreal, Brossard, Laval, Quebec City, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver or Halifax.
  • Relocation assistance is available for candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Team and Job Overview:

We are looking for an experienced candidate to join our Sectors and International Advisory (SIA) team in Canada to deliver on our mandate of creating trade opportunities for Canadian exporters and investors. In the role of the Global Trade Director – Agri-Food you will leverage your extensive global professional network, business development skills, personal industry expertise and knowledge of Canadian capabilities and global supply chains to generate and nurture new export business opportunities for Canadian exporters and investors.

The Global Trade Director, Agri-Food, will collaborate with our Global Business Development (GBD) team, which already has established relationships with prominent foreign buyers in key target markets. This role involves helping to evaluate these buyers' procurement needs and connecting them with Canadian companies offering relevant value propositions. The ideal candidate should be well-versed in food industry trends, have thorough knowledge of food manufacturing and international procurement practices, and understand Canadian strengths in Commodities, Private Label, Seafood, and Consumer-Packaged Goods.

The successful candidate should possess comprehensive expertise in the Agri-Food value chain and demonstrate strong connections within the Canadian Agri-Food ecosystem. This role is responsible for identifying and collaborating with leading Canadian suppliers and service providers to promote and facilitate their engagement in international business opportunities.

They will apply that knowledge and their business developments capabilities to help Canadian companies “Go, Grow, and Succeed” in the international arena.

What you will be doing:

  • To expand sales opportunities for Canadian exporters in foreign markets, develop strategies and relationships by thoroughly understanding their business challenges, procurement needs, and processes. Collaborate with EDC’s Global Business Development (GBD) team to execute the business connections program, helping Canadian Agri-Food companies enter new markets. Achieve this by matching Canadian capabilities with the requirements of top-tier foreign buyers and prospects.

  • Collaborate with the Agri-Food team at EDC to develop trade opportunities by facilitating introductions between foreign buyers and Canadian exporters, conducting supply chain assessments, providing matchmaking services, and more. These efforts aim to enable EDC to support and advance export trade through our financing and risk mitigation solutions.

  • Represent the voice of the foreign clients or prospects with regards to procurement opportunities to Canadian suppliers.

  • Establish EDC’s brand and create opportunities for integration and collaboration for Team Canada through strategic partnerships (Trade Commissioner Service, Farm Credit Canada, National and Provincial Food associations, Financial Institutions etc.)

  • Establish and lead Agri-Food communication to both internal and external virtual teams including sector associations and government partners

  • Work with various internal EDC teams to keep current on emerging Canadian technologies, methods, capabilities, and cascade market intelligence in Agri-Food.

  • Contribute to the development of foreign buyer account plans and trade creation strategies.

  • Help maintain and expand EDC’s relationship network with large foreign buyers focused on senior procurement influencers and decision makers.

  • Provide deep expertise on the technical capabilities and competitiveness of Canadian companies with a specific focus on the end-to-end ecosystem in the Farm to Factory and Factory to Consumer space.

  • Build knowledge and networks, including in ESG, to help Canadian companies find the right resources and support and facilitate market entry in the sector.

  • Promote a unified 1 Team Canada brand in Agri-Food and enable integration and collaboration among TCS, FCC, provinces, and other partners.

  • Can accurately review how current strategies are performing within the customer and marketplace and determine options for improvement.

What we are looking for:

  • Undergraduate Degree (or equivalent professional designation) in relevant discipline and/or Degree in Business Administration / Finance that has been coupled with the experience listed below.

  • Minimum 8 years of combined business development and account management experience in Commodities, Seafood, Consumer-Packaged Goods (both branded and Private Label) and the overall Agri-Food space.

  • Well-developed and deep global professional network and strong technical and business knowledge acquired through direct relevant business activity.

  • Advanced knowledge of best practices in sales and/or account management.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a matrix organization and lead virtual teams.

  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal, presentation).

  • Negotiation skills (external and/or internal).

  • Deep sector and sector specific technical knowledge.

  • Strong business development experience (preferably international).

  • Strong relationship management and networking skills.

  • Working knowledge of French.
