Job Description & Requirements

Please Note: Position is 7.50 hours/day, Monday to Friday, 12 months per year.

Purpose of Position

Under the supervision and direction of the Supervisor of Human Resources, the Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of the school division’s safety and health program to promote a safe and healthy workplace. This includes accident investigation and analysis; safety and health education and training, and policy and program development and review; assisting with worker compensation claims and the disability management program; and providing resource assistance to the WSH committees and divisional staff. The WSH Officer will work collaboratively with administration/management, employees, and Union representatives to build a strong internal responsibility system, where everyone has direct responsibility for safety and health as an essential part of their job.

Duties and Responsibilities

Are established by the Supervisor of Human Resources within the parameters of the job description.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized institute specializing in a Safety and Health related discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years work-related experience.
  • Certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional or working toward CRSP designation provided other related recognized/accredited Workplace Safety & Health certifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of other accredited Workplace Safety & Health certifications.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Familiarity with provincial health and safety legislation, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, the Workers Compensation Act, the Canadian Labour Code – Part II.
  • Demonstrated ability to work interdependently within a team environment and assess and analyze safety and health situations quickly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement all components of a “best practice” safety and health program including job hazard analysis, accident investigation, workplace assessments, ergonomic assessments, WHMIS implementation and the development and delivery of educational materials for employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective customer relationships with internal and external stakeholders including all staff.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership, conflict resolution and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge, understanding and demonstrated ability to apply principles of Workplace Safety & Health, related legislation, divisional policies, procedures, collective agreements and other.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and advanced skills in computer technology and software (including MS Office) related to the WS&H/human resources administration, communications, and management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating effective oral/written communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of division policies, procedures, and collective agreements would be an asset.
