Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting 2 Complexity Educational Assistants at Pine Street Elementary. We are seeking versatile Education Assistants to support our entire school community, including our System Program classrooms for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and complex learning needs, and with support in our Inclusive classrooms in K-6. This role requires a compassionate professional committed to fostering student growth through academic assistance, co-regulation strategies, the use of declarative language, and essential personal care, including changing, while upholding the highest standards of dignity and safety. Expertise in AAC is a significant asset, as you will play a vital role in bridging communication gaps and enhancing understanding for students with diverse needs across all educational settings.

Pine Street

Elementary serves approximately 370 students in kindergarten to Grade 6, with 20

teaching staff and 26 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB.

Pine Street Elementary strives to provide a safe and caring school

community built upon meaningful relationships. The school is committed to

excellence as self-directed, lifelong learners and develop into responsible

global citizens. Pine Street Elementary is also a designated Play And Learn at

School (PALS) pre-kindergarten site within the Division.

JOB SUMMARY

The Education Assistant (EA) assists teachers in creating

a welcoming, safe, and caring classroom that supports effective learning and

student success. Reporting to the Principal, the EA is assigned to assist

teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom

and during school activities. This includes providing student supervision and

assisting students with personal, physical, and medical care. Under the

direction of the teacher, and through interdisciplinary team planning, the position

supports programming for students and assists with the implementation of

developmental and behavioural strategies. The Certified EA has received specialized training to assist

children and

youth who have a wide range of abilities and exceptionalities including

significant emotional and behavioural challenges, learning difficulties and

complex physical health concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High School Diploma
  • Preference will be given to candidates with an Educational Assistant Certificate or a comparable post-secondary diploma or certificate
  • Participation in the EIPS Education Assistant Internship Program is considered an asset

Experience

  • 2 years of related experience working with children or youth.
  • Experience working in a school is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written

    communication skills.

  • Ability to take direction and work in a

    multi-disciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal

    supervision.

  • Knowledge of classroom routines,

    assistive technology and other care equipment.

  • Experience providing complex personal and

    physical care.

  • Ability to remain calm in a high stress,

    fast-paced environment.

  • Experience using de-escalation, emotional

    regulation, and co-regulation techniques.

  • Strong collaboration, organizational, and

    time management skills.

  • Flexibility, patience, sensitivity,

    tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity, and imagination.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety and

    awareness of applicable Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

  • Good knowledge of

    computers and applicable technology.

Qualifications, Certifications

  • First Aid certificate would be an asset

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset
