Position Summary The Clinical Operations, Shift Manager (COSM) is a key member of the hospital administrative team providing administrative and clinical support for staff within the site during non business hours. The COSM role is an opportunity for individuals who seek leadership challenges to learn about all facets of hospital operations and clinical programs within the hospital. The COSM has a high level of authority and autonomy and is expected to use judgement in making decisions which support attainment of Hospital goals and objectives, while creating an environment that supports the Mission, Vision, Purpose, Principles, and Values of the Hospital. The COSM is tasked with addressing emergent issues and facilitating the care of patients across services, other UHN sites, or in other facilities.
Duties
- Manage patient flow and hospital capacity
- Liaise with all units/areas to support hospital and nursing operations, with emphasis on assigning and directing clinical and non-clinical staff as necessary
- Ensure the appropriate delivery of care utilizing theory and evidence-based practice as a basis for clinical and administrative system decisions
- Ensure effective communication and act as a consultant to internal/external health care professionals within/outside the Hospital setting and to family/community members
- Maintain professional development of self and facilitates professional development of staff
- Ensure staff complies with quality improvement programs and other quality initiatives
- Respond to codes and act as site commander for any emergent issues
- Perform cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned and/or required
Qualifications
- Completion of a Bachelor's degree program in Nursing, Master's degree is preferred
- Current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Five (5) years of relevant experience; including 3 years of experience within an acute care setting
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Two (2) years progressive administrative experience in a nursing setting preferred
- Critical Care experience an asset
- Willingness and ability to make effective decisions with regards to operations, after consider existing protocols and the current situation
- Demonstrated commitment to learning, continuing education and implementing positive changes
- Excellent verbal/written communication, interpersonal and negotiating skills
- Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize work and set priorities
- Effective problem solving and analytical skills based upon a broad general knowledge of the Hospital
- Knowledge of professional standards and Quality Assurance guidelines (College of Nurses of Ontario)
- Knowledge of legislation provision, i.e. Employment Standards Act, Substitutes Decision Act, Social Contract Act, Human Rights legislation, etc., which impact the work performed
- Knowledge of team dynamics with the ability to work effectively as a team leader and team member
- Demonstrated ability to make appropriate decisions, exercise sound judgment and use considerable initiative
- Ability to work independently and function effectively in a constantly changing work environment
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change quickly and effectively
- Experience working in a unionized environment preferred
- Membership in a specialty related organization preferred
