This position reports to: Program Director
Contract: Full-Time, Grant Funded to September 2028 Location: This position is hybrid and includes a combination of community visits, in-office appointments, and virtual service delivery, with regular in-person work required at BCC’s Edmonton location. About Us: Brain Care Centre (BCC) exists to give those impacted by acquired brain injury the support needed to overcome limitations, reconnect, rebuild, and thrive in the community. BCC is a registered charitable not-for-profit organization that serves the spectrum of brain injury from mild to severe. The Role: The Adaptive Exercise Therapist will conduct client assessments, create individualized treatment plans, develop and lead groups related to physical movement and rehabilitation for BCC clients (adults living with acquired brain injury including strokes and concussions) and their caregivers. The successful candidate should be confident in supporting clients with goals related to improving physical function, managing symptoms, increasing participation in meaningful activities, and achieving individualized wellness goals. The ARS will also lead needs assessment, internal consultation, and co-coordination of groups and classes offered by Brain Care Centre aimed at improving community re-integration and improved quality of life for clients and their support systems. The ARS will be a key partner with the concussion lead in both program development and prevention-related outreach. The title of this role is flexible based on certifications of successful candidate. BCC is open to discussing fractional solutions.
Qualifications
Completed post-secondary education in Kinesiology (adaptive major an asset), Exercise Science, Physical Education, Exercise physiology, or a related field, or both personal training and group exercise certification. Current Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP) designation or American College of Sports Medicine Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) designation or an equivalent/relevant registration with a professional regulating body. Preference will be given to candidates with an Adapted Physical Activity, Adapted Physical Education, or other adapted rehabilitation major/concentration/certification Experience working with individuals with acquired brain injury, concussions, stroke, neurological conditions, or complex health conditions preferred Experience facilitating therapeutic exercise groups, wellness programs, or community-based rehabilitation programs preferred Current First Aid and CPR certification Up-to-date and clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check Possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle with $2 million liability insurance Strong assessment, communication, organizational, and group facilitation skills Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within an interdisciplinary team Experience with program development and evaluation is an asset.
Key Duties
Conduct comprehensive assessments of physical function, exercise tolerance, mobility, balance, strength, endurance, and functional activity with BCC Clients. Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized exercise and activity programs based on client goals and clinical recommendations Support individuals seeking service post-concussion and acquired brain injury through assisting with intakes, symptom-informed exercise progression and rehabilitation programming Establish, implement, and measure progress on individualized, client-centered goals Monitor client progress and modify exercise prescriptions and interventions as appropriate Contribute to the development and delivery of exercise-based group interventions, wellness programming, and educational classes Develop and facilitate classes related to physical activity, healthy lifestyles, community participation, pacing, fatigue management, and brain health in coordination with other BCC Professionals Research and disseminate knowledge related to exercise physiology, brain injury rehabilitation, concussion recovery, and wellness programming as requested Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with service or referral-based partnerships with community agencies and programs Advocate on behalf of clients when gaps in services are identified and additional supports are required Maintain competency in community-based rehabilitation practices related to brain injury, concussion, neurological conditions, and exercise rehabilitation Provide education and training to clients, families, staff, students, and community organizations Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, progress notes, service statistics, and reports in the electronic database in accordance with organizational and professional standards. Quarterly and annual reporting is required by BCC funders. Provide current statistical and client service information from the database as required for reporting, program evaluation, and funding requirements.
Attend weekly mini-rounds and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings
Support administrative duties as required Workplace and Compensation This is a hybrid position including office and community work, with work from home as confirmed with supervisor; the BCC Edmonton office has free lot and street parking. Use of own vehicle with mileage reimbursement will be required. Transporting clients is not required. BCC covers professional registration fees. A full-time work week at BCC is 37.5 hours. BCC is open to discussing fractional coverage of this position if stated in your application. The majority of work will occur during BCC working hours of 8:30-4:30PM Monday-Friday, on occasion evening or weekend engagements may be required with hours flexed accordingly. BCC full time staff must participate in LTD, AD&D, Critical Illness, and Life Insurance through the group benefit plan. 5% RRSP match after 6 months Cost shared health and dental benefits available after probationary period Generous paid time off including personal days, holiday closure, and starting at 3 weeks vacation. Salary to be negotiated based on qualifications and experience, ranging from $45,000 – $58,500 Annually.
