Position Overview
Cabot Cape Breton is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Recreation Manager to develop and oversee our premier outdoor activities, including Tennis, Axe Throwing, Archery, Kayaking, Hiking, Highland Off-Roading, as well as contracted excursions including Whale Watching, Fly-Fishing, Deep-Sea Fishing, Catamaran Tours, Cultural Events, Whisky Tours, and more. This role requires a dynamic leader with a passion for outdoor recreation, a commitment to safety, and the ability to deliver unforgettable guest experiences. As the Recreation manager, you will manage daily operations, lead guided tours and activities, work with a team of recreation staff, and ensure all activities exceed guest expectations while maintaining the highest safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and inspire a team of recreation professionals, ensuring they are well-trained, motivated, and aligned with the resort's values.
- Schedule and coordinate staff to ensure seamless operation of all activities, adjusting as needed to accommodate guest demand and staffing needs.
- Serve as the face of the resort's recreational offerings, interacting with guests to provide expert guidance, personalized recommendations, and a warm welcome, as well as personally deliver guided tours and experiences as needed.
- Proactively address guest feedback and concerns, resolving issues swiftly to maintain a high level of guest satisfaction.
- Uphold and enforce stringent safety protocols across all activities, conducting regular safety briefings and equipment checks.
- Ensure that all recreation areas and equipment are maintained to the highest safety and operational standards, coordinating repairs and replacements as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to design and implement innovative programs that attract and engage a diverse range of guests, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts.
- Continuously evaluate and refine existing activities to keep the offerings fresh, exciting, and aligned with guest preferences.
- Oversee the daily operations of the recreation department, ensuring that all activities are executed flawlessly, and facilities are impeccably maintained.
- Manage inventory of equipment and supplies, ensuring availability and readiness for all activities.
- Assist in developing and managing the recreation department's budget, tracking expenses, and contributing to revenue-generating initiatives.
- Monitor and report on financial performance, identifying opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
- Mentor and develop team members, providing ongoing training and professional development opportunities to foster growth and expertise.
- Lead regular team meetings to align on goals, share feedback, and celebrate successes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Hospitality, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in a supervisory or managerial role within a recreation or outdoor activities setting, with a strong emphasis on guest service and safety.
- In-depth knowledge and passion for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking, fishing and guided activities.
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- CPR and First Aid certification required.
Preferred Qualifications And Skills

- Must possess excellent emotional intelligence, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Minimum 2 years of Hotel Managerial leadership experience.
- Strong general management skills, including time management, information analysis, planning and organizing, decision making, problem solving, and delivery of results.
- Strong people management skills, including coaching, motivating, delegating, scheduling, and relationship-building.
- Computer literacy required in Property and Golf Management systems and Microsoft Office
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Hotel/hospitality Management Diploma/Degree an asset
- Experience in special events and event planning an asset
Working Conditions
- Work in both office spaces and outdoor recreational areas.
- Work outdoors in varying environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Operate vehicles and equipment for several hours at a time in various weather conditions.
- Involves walking, standing, and handling equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment, supplies, and materials, which may weigh up to 50 pounds or more.
- Basic first aid and CPR skills are often required, with the ability to perform these tasks if needed.
- Capability to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.
- Familiarity with the technical aspects of recreational equipment, such as maintaining and troubleshooting issues with archery targets, firearms, and axe-throwing setups.
