PHILOSOPHY

The Manager, Community Relations and Resource Development carries a responsibility to represent him/herself professionally with those we support, co-workers, and within the community. Our primary responsibility is to the individuals and families supported. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Relations is an agency-wide and county-wide program. As a result, the position serves as a resource to the people we support, their families, staff, membership, and the citizens of Essex County. Areas of responsibility include co-ordination of the Agency’s community engagement plans, public relations, media relations, fund raising activities, special events and membership. Of central focus, is its role in public education and awareness and its goals of creating an understanding of people with a developmental disability and building stronger communities where all people belong. Responsible for developing and managing the annual Community Relations budget. Represents the Agency on internal and community committees and acts as a liaison with families, other professionals, the media, and community citizens, businesses, and organizations.

The Manager, Community Relations and Resource Development will hold responsibilities for the following:

  • Managing public education/awareness activities including the Speaker’s Bureau, informational displays, annual public awareness campaigns, agency brochures and print materials as approved and identified in the marketing and community engagement work plan.
  • Coordinate a robust annual membership campaign including developing communication tools and materials to communicate Agency key messages and the importance of members.
  • Coordinate and maintain an electronic relationship management system to support the engagement of key stakeholder groups including donors, members and volunteers and develop campaigns, tools and processes to maintain individualized communications and recognition programs.
  • Developing nomination packages for local, provincial, and national awards; assisting with the completion of internal and external award nominations.
  • Acting as spokesperson, when designated, on behalf of the Agency in radio, television, and print interviews; drafting media releases, speeches and articles for various publications; arranging and co-ordinating media coverage of issues and events; maintaining archives of all media coverage and reporting all media coverage monthly to the Board of Directors.
  • Managing fund raising, donor loyalty and planned giving events and initiatives; acting as a resource to others who are raising funds on behalf of the Agency; recruiting, training, and supervising of fund raising volunteers; and arranging events/activities to recognize contributions.
  • Seeks out new grant, funding and partnership opportunities that align with the vision, mission and strategic goals of the organization.
  • Co-ordinates the writing and follow-up of proposals, grant applications and other reports as assigned.
  • Co-ordinating Public Awareness and recognition events including award and cheque presentations.
  • Liaising with community members and agencies in order to develop a positive relationship between the Agency and the broader community.
  • Representing the Agency on internal and external committees as requested
  • Developing and administering annual Community Relations budget including forecasting and expenditure approvals.
  • Providing leadership to appointed Committees.
  • Be knowledgeable about and adhere to Agency Policy and Procedures. Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act including; use of personal protective devices and reporting of any health and safety concerns or hazards.
  • Responsible for role modelling and self-development in core competencies as related to the role of a manager.
  • Lead by example to foster a respectful, inclusive, and accountable workplace culture that aligns with the Agency’s mission, values, and legislative obligations. Promote collaboration, psychological safety, and positive conflict resolution across teams.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

Education: Graduation from a post-secondary institution, with a minimum of three-year diploma/degree in communication studies, journalism, marketing or social sciences.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years working with people with a developmental disability and/or in a related human service field. Experience in public relations and/or journalism/broadcasting.

Special Skills: Class G driver’s licenCe and access to an automobile. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and computer graphics software.

Equipment Used: Audio/visual equipment, digital camera, projectors, computer and mobile devices.

Working Conditions: Involves travel within the community. Office environment with minimal exposure to health and/or safety hazards.

Responsibility for Supervision: Grant positions, as appropriate.

Physical Effort: Could require physical efforts according to the program needs.

Contract Dates: April 13, 2026 - April 9, 2027
Initial Hours of Work: 40 hours per week with flexibility to work outside of regularly scheduled work hours as required.

We offer a wide range of services including respite, person-directed planning, employment supports, residential programs, and community-based activities. The “community living movement” began with families who wanted their children to live in the community, rather than institutions. Today, we continue to advocate for inclusive communities and support the rights and choices of people with an intellectual disability.
