Job Summary
This is a senior working level sound engineering technical position, responsible for managing all aspects of audio engineering & video recording production, post-production and various aspects of event production for the UBC School of Music, students, faculty, other University units and outside clients.
Hires, trains and supervises a staff Work/Learn Student Technicians including Head Student Technicians, Recording & Audio Technicians and Videographer/Editors, managing their development and output with the support of the R&A Unit Coordinator, as part of a collaborative program.
Designs, fabricates and installs specialized, complex audio and video systems in the UBC School of Music’s two main performance venues – Roy Barnett Concert Hall & the Old Auditorium, and provides consultation to Director, UBC Project Managers and external clients, requiring a high level of expertise.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Administration Manager and Director of the School of Music, operating with considerable autonomy and independence. Advises Director on major infrastructure projects, renovations and classroom technologies. Collaborates with the production team of the Chan Centre, the Stage Technician at the Old Auditorium, and engages external service providers when necessary. Advises and works with faculty, staff, and students on special projects, events and designing, fabricating and installing complex electronic systems.
Work Performed
-
Design, establish, implement and maintain professional-level recording practices and state-of-the-art audio recording and post-production capabilities.

Design and fabricate complex wiring systems utilizing analog and digital audio and video signal paths and manage complex proprietary networks.

Advise School of Music Director, outside consultants, contractors and UBC project managers on major technical, acoustical and infrastructure upgrades and renovations to performance venues and instructional spaces and on capital expenditure in related areas as required based on established expertise and ongoing research.

Advise users of performance & recording venues upon the feasibility and practicality of technical and production components required as well as the adaptation and modification of equipment for specific needs.

Perform preventative and reactive maintenance as required on relevant School of Music systems and equipment, to meet the high degree of precision needed for professional teaching, performance and recording.

Diagnose and repair, or arrange for repair, of all faulty or damaged equipment, systems or networks, to ensure they meet the demands of recording and production for academic documentation and external rental business.

Hire, supervise, mentor and coordinate the work of a team of 6-10 student technicians each academic term.

Provide a program of advanced sound engineering training to these technicians, including: audio & electronics theory; professional recording practice; audio over IP networking systems; videography & post-production etc.

Instruct, demonstrate and supervise other personnel in equipment usages and operation including specialized equipment and techniques.

Responsible for implementing and maintaining safety requirements, in connection with all technical work, and in the use of electronic equipment by faculty, students, and external clients.

Supervise recording, sound engineering, videography and webcasting of large-scale ensemble performance events in the Chan Shun Concert Hall.

Maintain detailed technical records and inventory of all audio-visual equipment and systems in Roy Barnett Hall and the Old Auditorium.

Select, assess and order parts, tools and equipment, working within stipulated budget allocations.

Stay informed of advances in technology and equipment, and updates knowledge accordingly.

Carry out other related duties as required, in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Recording and production activities involved in live events often require immediate, decisive action and judgement in high-pressure, ever-evolving situations and the incumbent must have the ability to troubleshoot and work with alternative solutions in the event of equipment failure or other unanticipated issues.
Errors in audio or recording can have an immediate effect on student & professional performers as well as the public reputation of the School of Music. Graduate-level performances and lecture/recitals must be fully documented for external examination, and therefore there are also academic consequences.
This position involves decision making on technological equipment systems, which can have significant financial repercussions if budget, capabilities, volume, maintenance and future-proofing are not sufficiently considered.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Administration Manager and Director of the School of Music. Works independently under their general direction.
Supervision Given
Recruits, hires and manages up to 10 student Recording + Audio technicians. Reviews the team’s work for quality and professionalism, schedules “on call” times for troubleshooting, and handles performance discussions where necessary. Works with the support of the R&A Unit Coordinator to supervise the students in the unit.
Minimum Qualifications Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate and/or Masters degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute (Music, Sound Recording, Audio Technology, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or CIT) and/or equivalent education and professional experience.

Experience in a professional audio recording environment working with established recording artists and performers on events and recording projects.
-
Experience in a professional video production environment working with established artists and performers on comprehensive projects including pre-production, production and post-production phases.
-
Experience in leading research, planning, purchasing, implementation and operation of high-level audio and video recording systems and establishing audio and video production and post-production workflows.
-
Experience collaborating with small and large ensemble directors and conductors, composers and faculty members working on complex, high-level projects. Ability to work with event support & management personnel and front-of-house, stage management and other support staff and partners.

Experience coordinating events and managing the communication between artists and performers, recording technicians, external clients and audiences in a professional and/or educational venue and environment.

Experience in performing arts environments including, but not exclusive to, venue operations, event management, stage and video lighting, audio-visual support and live-streaming and collaboration with staff on promotional and educational support material production.

High-level experience in live sound-reinforcement environments with an emphasis on acoustic music performances requiring a high degree of precision and refinement.

Experience in recruiting, hiring, training and supervising both inexperienced and experienced production staff and working with outside professionals in high pressure environments.

Teaching experience with student and professional staff involving audio and video technical and aesthetic theory and practice, professional production standards and navigating complex workflows with students at differing levels of experience or background.

Experience directing and supervising teams to ensure successful project & event outcomes through thoughtful, strategic guidance and mentorship.

Experience with fostering and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and ensuring a safe and welcoming work environment for all.

Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, customer service, problem solving and supervisory skills.

Advanced computer skills including operation and maintenance of Mac & Windows operating systems, complex networking protocols including Audio over IP (AoIP), Merging Pyramix or other high-level Digital Audio Workstations including source/destination editing workflows, and non-linear video editing workflows utilizing DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere or other equivalent programs.
