Overview
The Senior Financial Accountant is responsible for full life-cycle accounting, guiding and supporting clients with the financial requirements, financial systems and reporting.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, working papers, and financial analyses.
- Lead and coordinate assigned components of the annual financial statement preparation process, including supporting schedules, note disclosures, and audit working papers.
- Support the preparation of statutory and management financial reports, including year-end, quarterly and monthly reporting.
- Research, interpret, and apply Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and relevant municipal finance requirements.
- Analyze financial data and provide advice on accounting treatment, reporting implications, and internal control considerations.
- Assist with the annual external audit process, including responding to audit inquiries and coordinating documentation requests.
- Review general ledger activity and investigate variances, discrepancies, and unusual transactions.
- Support capital, reserve, tangible capital asset, and other specialized accounting areas as assigned.
- Contribute to the development, documentation, and improvement of financial reporting procedures and business processes.
- Provide technical guidance and support to finance staff and internal departments on accounting and financial reporting matters.
- Participate in corporate and departmental projects related to financial systems, reporting improvements, and policy implementation.
- Ensure compliance with City policies, internal controls, and applicable legislation and standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting practices, and internal controls.
- Strong knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards; municipal accounting experience is highly desirable.
- Sound understanding of financial statement preparation, audit support, account analysis, and reconciliations.
- Ability to interpret legislation, accounting standards, policies, and procedures, and apply them in a municipal context.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines, especially during year-end and audit periods.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial matters clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Strong sense of professionalism and demonstrates good judgement, especially pertaining to confidential matters.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with enterprise financial systems and reporting tools.
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word).
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years directly related experience.
- Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA)
Working Conditions:
