Overview

The Senior Financial Accountant is responsible for full life-cycle accounting, guiding and supporting clients with the financial requirements, financial systems and reporting.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare and review complex journal entries, account reconciliations, working papers, and financial analyses.
  • Lead and coordinate assigned components of the annual financial statement preparation process, including supporting schedules, note disclosures, and audit working papers.
  • Support the preparation of statutory and management financial reports, including year-end, quarterly and monthly reporting.
  • Research, interpret, and apply Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and relevant municipal finance requirements.
  • Analyze financial data and provide advice on accounting treatment, reporting implications, and internal control considerations.
  • Assist with the annual external audit process, including responding to audit inquiries and coordinating documentation requests.
  • Review general ledger activity and investigate variances, discrepancies, and unusual transactions.
  • Support capital, reserve, tangible capital asset, and other specialized accounting areas as assigned.
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and improvement of financial reporting procedures and business processes.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to finance staff and internal departments on accounting and financial reporting matters.
  • Participate in corporate and departmental projects related to financial systems, reporting improvements, and policy implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with City policies, internal controls, and applicable legislation and standards.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting practices, and internal controls.
  • Strong knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards; municipal accounting experience is highly desirable.
  • Sound understanding of financial statement preparation, audit support, account analysis, and reconciliations.
  • Ability to interpret legislation, accounting standards, policies, and procedures, and apply them in a municipal context.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines, especially during year-end and audit periods.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial matters clearly to non-financial audiences.
  • Strong sense of professionalism and demonstrates good judgement, especially pertaining to confidential matters.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with enterprise financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word).

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years directly related experience.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA)

This job is generally performed in an office environment.
