About the role

Job Description

Reporting to the Superintendent, Road Operations, and under the general direction of the Supervisor and/or designate, perform various general Technologist duties in the Parks & Road Operations Services Branch of the Community & Operations Services Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform various duties to support the Roads Technologist and assist with season peak work loads but not limited to:
  • Completing fieldwork including but not limited to data collection, site monitoring, contract administration like SWMP cleaning, curb cuts, slab jacking and sidewalk replacements
  • Preparing deficiency lists, schedules and estimates
  • Maintaining inventories for budgets
  • Undertaking research
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Completing appropriate work records and related paper work such as but limited to time sheets and event/activity schedules
  • Work in accordance with the City of Oshawa’s Safe Work Standards and the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Maintain good public relations using a positive, respectful and enthusiastic attitude as an ambassador of the City of Oshawa
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Preference will be given to students who are currently attending school and registered in a University or Community College program in Civil Engineering or equivalent and have previous work experience in a municipal or construction related industry
  • Field or lab experience in surveying, concrete and asphalt testing materials, drainage and structures
  • Excellent research, analytical, mathematical skills
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, customer service skills to deal effectively with staff and the general public. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions concerning routine or unique work assignments
  • Experience and skills using Personal Computers and various software applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, GIS, AutoCAD)
  • Good interpersonal skills; common sense and courtesy to deal with the general public and to communicate with colleagues.
  • Must be able to work within a group and also independently with minimal supervision
  • Able to perform strenuous work such as climbing, lifting and moving heavy items (80 lbs./approx. 36 kgs.), involving considerable effort, and capable of performing the work assigned in a safe manner
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS)
  • Able to work weekends and holidays as required due based on operational requirements
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Ontario Driver's License, minimum Class "G" or higher, in good standing, and able to pass the Corporation's tests for motor vehicle operation

As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check.
