Our belief that that every person is born with the ability to succeed in life, on their own terms has enabled us to serve children, youth, and adults with disabilities, and their families, since 1969, when we were first established as the BC Neurological Association.
In 2024 BCCFA was named as the lead agency to implement a Foundry centre in Burnaby, in collaboration with community members and community agencies. Foundry centres serve young people aged 12-24 and provide physical and sexual health care, mental health and substance use care, work and education services, and peer supports. Development is underway with a goal to open by 2027. Foundry centre development involves significant engagement with community members, particularly young people and their families.
About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Psychosocial and Adult Services, the Engagement Coordinator will be involved in the community engagement components of developing Foundry Burnaby. In collaboration with other team members, the Engagement Coordinator is responsible for connecting with young people and their families, helping promote the Foundry Burnaby at various community events which may also involve coordinating youth volunteers, and contributing to the development of strong advisory committees to guide the development of services in the community. This role may also involve support of fundraising events and engagement with potential donors to Foundry Burnaby, including presentions to local community groups. The ideal candidate has some experience living, working, engaging with services, or going to school in Burnaby.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, and implement activation activities for booth at community events, attend community events throughout the summer (evening and weekend work will be required), run activation activities at Foundry information booth, and provide information to community members about Foundry development, upcoming services, and capital campaign.
- Coordinate youth volunteers to support Foundry booth at community events.
- Promote public awareness and support for the program by helping to develop and deliver public presentations as needed.
- Support two advisory committees (youth and families) to bring youth and family voices, opinions, and lived experiences to the broader decision-making process for implementing services in the community.
- Establish rapport and build positive relationships with youth and their families, including youth with varying levels of mental wellness, substance use concerns, and complex health and social needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural safety, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion practices.
- Knowledge of systemic issues and risk factors facing minority groups, including LGBTQIA2S+ and Indigenous youth and young adults.
- Facilitate meaningful engagement and participation of youth and families in focus groups, surveys, research, evaluation, and other opportunities to further build capacity and leadership.
- Perform administrative functions, including writing reports, producing documents and presentations, leading or supporting policy development, and ensuring adherence to policies.
- Support Foundry project with other duties as required.
- Deliver services with a high degree of self-awareness, confidentiality, and a clear understanding of personal and role-specific limits and boundaries.
- Work independently, show initiative, and be part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Working knowledge of basic computers (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays as needed for events.
- Ability to transport booth supplies including tent, folding table, and Foundry materials.
- Ability to travel around Burnaby by personal vehicle or transit.
The Qualifications and Skills you Bring
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. A diploma or degree in a related field (Social Services, Child and Youth Care, etc.) is a significant asset.
- One year of work or volunteer experience working with youth and their families in a related field.
- Demonstrated lived experience with mental health or substance use, or as a caregiver, is an asset.
- Physically capable of performing the role’s duties.
