About the role

THE ROLE

The Fusing Technician is responsible for the safe and accurate installation, fusion, testing, and commissioning of polyethylene (PE) gas distribution piping systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the integrity, safety, and reliability of natural gas infrastructure by performing precision fusion work in compliance with regulatory, client, and company standards.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a commitment to safety excellence, and the ability to work efficiently in dynamic field environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Gas Pipe Fusion & Installation

  • Perform butt fusion, electrofusion, and saddle fusion of polyethylene (PE) gas piping in accordance with Manitoba Hydro specifications, and project requirements.
  • Prepare pipe and fittings through proper cleaning, alignment, facing, and clamping to ensure consistent, high-quality fusion joints.
  • Complete mainline installations, service connections, tie-ins, abandonments, and system extensions in live and dead gas environments where authorized

Quality Control & Testing

  • Inspect fusion joints for proper bead formation, alignment, and surface finish.
  • Perform pressure testing, purging, commissioning, and leak detection in accordance with regulatory and utility owner requirements.
  • Accurately complete fusion logs, test records, daily field reports, and as-built documentation to meet client, regulatory, and internal QA/QC standards.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere strictly to company safety programs, utility owner requirements, and provincial and federal regulations.
  • Participate in job hazard assessments (JHAs), tailgate meetings, and multi-utility coordination briefings.
  • Maintain situational awareness when working near live gas, electrical, fibre, and water infrastructure.
  • Immediately report and mitigate hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.

Cross-Utility Coordination & Field Support

  • Work collaboratively with gas, telecom, power, and civil crews to maintain safe clearances and sequencing of work.
  • Communicate effectively with Supervisors, inspectors, utility owners, and management teams.

Equipment, Fleet & Asset Care

  • Operate, inspect, and maintain fusion equipment, generators, heaters, facing tools, and testing instruments.
  • Ensure equipment is calibrated, compliant, and job-ready at all times.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and jobsite assets in accordance with company policies.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 2–5 years of experience in polyethylene (PE) gas pipe fusion and gas utility construction.
  • Valid Manitoba Hydro F2 gas fusion certification
  • Experience working on live gas systems is a strong asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and work orders.
  • Proficient with fusion equipment, pressure testing tools, leak detection instruments, and performing required inspection checks to ensure standards are met.
  • Strong safety awareness, risk management mindset, and comfort working around energized
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a crew in fast-paced field environments.
  • Strong attention to detail, commitment to quality workmanship, and high personal integrity.
  • Effective communication, teamwork skills, and a professional, mature demeanor under pressure.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clear driving abstract a must.
  • Willing and able to travel out of town, including weekdays and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and handle heavy materials and equipment.
  • Comfortable working in excavations, confined spaces, and active construction zones.
