The Opportunity
Join our dynamic Public Works team at the City of St. John's as we seek a dedicated and skilled Supervisor - Sports Field Maintenance.
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor in the Parks and Open Spaces Division, the successful applicant must have a strong desire to be cooperative and will be required to be a team player in order to be successful in this position. Must be highly organized, innovative, conscious of changing priorities and willing and able to adapt quickly to any situation. The incumbent will maintain safe workplaces, procedures and practices. This is an exciting opportunity ideally suited to those with a horticulture, arboriculture, or parks maintenance background.
Accountabilities
- Oversees the planning, coordination, and supervision of staff responsible for maintaining sports fields and hard surface courts. This role also ensures facilities are properly prepared for tournaments and special events, providing leadership and direction to support high-quality recreational spaces.
- Reviews and follows landscape plans and specifications associated with capital improvement and renovation projects.
- Administers a turf maintenance program.
- Schedules tasks and associated staff involving a variety of trades and skills sets for efficiency, and cost effectiveness, as well as maintains daily personnel time records.
- Provides staff and equipment support to designated sport and special events.
- Communicates and cooperates with City personnel, contractors, suppliers, members of the public, and public utilities as situations require.
- Ensures requisitions and purchase orders are issued in accordance with needs and in compliance with the computerized maintenance management system.
- Implements the Collective Agreement where it applies, recommends and administers discipline as required.
- Conducts inspections and investigations; provides written and verbal reports as required.
- Utilizes a computerized database for work orders and complaints, information.
- Places a high value on work site safety, conducts toolbox talks, and be well versed in OH&S policies and procedures.
- Be willing to take on jobs to balance the team workload.
- Other duties as required.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. Qualifications
- Applicants for this position must be high school graduates with post-secondary education in sport field/park maintenance, horticulture, arboriculture, landscape construction, civil engineering technology or related field.
- A team player with a minimum of five years supervisory or leadership experience in the area of horticulture, arboriculture, landscape or parkland maintenance.
- Applicants must possess a minimum of class 5 driver’s license and be prepared to take additional training for other classes and endorsements.
- Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to deal with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner; ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment; and have computer experience in spreadsheet development and maintenance.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and experience in snow and ice control are assets.
- Familiarity with motorized turf equipment are assets.
- Applicant must have a clear understanding and awareness of the Work Place Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC) Legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Human Rights Legislation. Training in Occupational Health & Safety and WHSCC Legislation will be considered an asset.

This position is classified as safety sensitive. The City of St. John’s has a comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Policy to ensure fitness for work and the completion of a satisfactory alcohol and drug test is a mandatory pre-employment requirement.
Working Conditions
This position requires outdoor work and could involve responding to severe weather conditions such as flooding, winter events, and windstorms. Extended periods of shift work and extensive overtime during winter months. Travel throughout the City is required to visit work sites.
Hours of Work
Shift work as required.
