**Position Purpose:**The Guardians of Canadian Species Hub Coordinator reports to the Applied Conservation leadership team, and is responsible for coordinating activities as they pertain to the Guardians of Canadian Species Hub at your Toronto Zoo. This role will engage external and internal partners at the local, regional and national levels, including partner and community engagement, program integration, and delivery of conservation impact as recommended by the Canadian Biodiversity Strategy. The position will be involved in establishing a framework to align our conservation work for Canadian species, and drive measurable, and collaborative outcomes. Grounded in the Toronto Zoo’s mission, vision, and 2025–2027 Strategic Plan, the Hub will apply a “One Well-being” framework to highlight the Zoo’s expertise while advancing integrated, partner-driven conservation action. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Toronto Zoo Strategic Plan.

##Core Role Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating activities as they pertain to the Guardians of Canadian Species Hub (GCSH) at your Toronto Zoo.
  • Working with various Zoo departments, grow and strengthen partnerships with NGOs, academic institutions, Indigenous communities, government agencies, industry, and private-sector collaborators.
  • Assist in building strategic partner connections to align expertise, resources, and action toward shared conservation outcomes.
  • Help in positioning the Hub as a convenor for collaborative conservation in Canada.
  • Strengthen national and international linkages through alignment with Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy, Canadian Biodiversity Strategy, IUCN SSC Specialist Groups and other conservation entities.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange between Canadian conservation efforts and global best practices.
  • Increase and deepen participation in the Reverse the Red partnership.
  • Help to develop a strong, recognizable conservation identity for the Hub that complements and amplifies existing Toronto Zoo programs.
  • Support community outreach, capacity building, and knowledge sharing.
  • Work closely with Wildlife Science and Strategic Communications to translate conservation science into accessible, engaging content.
  • Produce conservation activity reports, impact summaries, and storytelling outputs for internal and external audiences.
  • Participate in study design and implementation, including writing project reports, scientific papers, white papers, and case studies on projects for circulation among stakeholders.
  • Helps ensure GCSH programs meet the accreditation standards of AZA, CCAC and OMAFRA and comply with standards prescribed by other relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Consults, cooperates, and works closely with all staff of the Wildlife Science Division. Participates in regular science team meetings within the Division.
  • Develops and conducts staff and volunteer training and education programs for guests, community, and outside agencies.
  • Contributes to the development of strategic and campus plans that reflect conservation priorities and programs.
  • Participates in public facing activities, such as tours, presentations, media interviews, and special events as an ambassador for the Zoo.
  • Supports divisional activities related to team building, career development and positive work environment.
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by Applied Conservation leadership team.
  • Follows all polices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Attends appropriate training courses as required.

##Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must have a post-graduate degree from a recognized institution in an appropriate area of the Biological Sciences and demonstrated expertise in zoology, field conservation biology, or a closely related discipline, or the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
  • Experience in ex situ and in situ research and appropriate handling of wildlife.
  • An understanding of the importance of zoo conservation and education work, both locally and internationally.
  • A broad knowledge of Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) standards and practices
  • Experience in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish results in peer reviewed journals.
  • Ability to research papers, reports and give formal presentation to groups and individuals.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
  • Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills including excellent writing skills and the ability to speak confidently in public.
  • Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
  • Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled.
  • Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
