Position Summary:

The Electronic Hardware Designer is a key contributor to the design, development, and lifecycle management of Wesko Locks’ electronic products. This role is hands-on and focuses on electronic hardware design activities including schematic design, PCB development support, component selection, testing, and production support.

You will work within a cross-functional team including firmware, mechanical, production/sourcing, and technical support. The role supports continuous improvement initiatives, manages engineering documentation and production revisions, and assists in resolving complex technical issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Design:

  • Design, develop, and maintain electronic hardware for new and existing products.
  • Create schematics and support PCB layout and design activities.
  • Design systems that meet product requirements and internal cost targets.
  • Support validation, verification, and environmental testing of electronic designs.
  • Collaborate closely with firmware, software, and mechanical resources (internal and external).

Production Support:

  • Develop and manage Engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Design tools and fixtures to support production requirements.
  • Develop and document assembly processes and provide training as required.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of novel or complex production issues and implement corrective actions in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Customer Support:

  • Support the technical support team by providing product knowledge and troubleshooting guidance.
  • Assist with on-site customer technical support when required.
  • Collaborate with sales, technical support, and other stakeholders to validate product requirements.

Sourcing Support:

  • Monitor electronic component lifecycle status and identify replacement options for end-of-life components.

Cross-Functional Support:

  • Provide technical support and input across internal departments.
  • Participate in cross-functional problem-solving initiatives as required.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities to enhance workflow, reduce waste and carbon footprint, and improve overall efficiency.
  • Participate in and lead continuous improvement projects.
  • Document improvements and communicate technical changes to stakeholders.
  • From time to time, workload requirements may change, and the Electronic Hardware Designer may be required to perform other duties as needed to support business needs.

The most competitive candidates will have:

  • Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on experience in electronic hardware design or a similar role.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of electronic product design, BOM management, and engineering change processes; knowledge of manufacturing processes related to electro-mechanical assemblies; familiarity with component lifecycle management and end-of-life (EOL) replacement strategies.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and root cause problem-solving skills; ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams; strong organizational skills with attention to detail and documentation accuracy; hands-on skills including soldering and basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Technical ability: Ability to interpret schematics, technical drawings, and electronic specifications; experience maintaining engineering documentation supporting change control processes; ability to produce Gerber files for manufacturing (required).
  • Computer skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) (required); experience with CAD/EDA tools, ERP systems, and SolidWorks (preferred).
  • Education: Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • Eligibility: Legally entitled to work in Canada (required).

Working Conditions:

  • On-site role in both office and manufacturing environment.
  • Regular interaction with the production floor (exposure to noise, lubricants, and general shop-floor conditions).
  • Must comply with all PPE and safety requirements.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular walking, standing, and movement between the office and production floor.
  • Occasional lifting or movement of materials up to 50 lbs.

Schedule:

  • 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
  • Additional hours may be required occasionally to support business needs.
  • Occasional travel up to 5%.
