The Position

We are seeking a part-time Literacy Coordinator to oversee our Literacy Outreach and Community Adult Literacy programs. Lift Literacy Programs provide qathet residents with community literacy education and support. This includes all components of literacy including physical, social, environmental, digital, family and any identified gap in knowledge that acts as a barrier to full participation in the community. This role champions Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; poverty reduction; social justice; and human rights.

Overview

  • Site: Lift Community House

  • Hours: 21 hours per week

  • Possible days: Wednesday-Friday

  • Shifts: 9am-4:30pm

  • Hourly Wage: $25.05 to start, on a 5-step wage scale

Key Accountabilities

  • host and facilitate a minimum of three Literacy Task Force meetings per year, and maintain an archive of minutes

  • liaise, initiate, and build positive working relationships with agencies and local governments; attend relevant community meetings to address literacy gaps in the community

  • act as a liaison and create partnerships between literacy providers in the community to encourage communication, cooperation, and creative collaboration

  • maintain an accessible library of community resources for literacy

  • design curriculum of services that will be offered and procure learning materials and resources

  • plan and deliver tutor training

  • match tutors and learners and facilitate learner support programs and services; support them to find meeting spaces in community

  • oversee tutor and learner events for educational purposes according to identified needs or interests

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or combination of education and experience

  • 2 years experience in literacy project development and coordination

  • Experience managing a volunteer program that has included training and supervising

  • Ability to function both independently and collaboratively

  • General and local knowledge of literacy programs and resources

  • Knowledge and application of the principles of adult education

  • Knowledge of group process and facilitation techniques

  • Experience building and maintaining positive relationships and liaising with agencies and different levels of government

  • Knowledge and application of community development principles

  • Experience organizing events

  • Familiar with local community resources

  • Ethically aligned with Harm-Reduction practices
