Under the supervision of the Public Art Conservators and the Glenbow's Conservation Manager, you will carry out the conservation treatment of three indoor painted murals located in the Plus15 Network in downtown Calgary. Primary duties include:

  • Conduct conservation treatment on the murals, including surface cleaning, localized humidification, consolidation of delaminating paint, and inpainting.
  • Contribute to a safe work environment, maintaining the work site, materials and equipment and following all relevant health and safety protocols.
  • Assist in the direction and supervision of a Paintings Conservation Summer Student, who will be working alongside you on this project.
  • Work daily in a public setting, speaking to members of the public about the project as required.
  • Provide other conservation support to the Public Art Collection as needed, including condition assessments, advising on artworks in the collection and new acquisitions, and performing treatments that require minimal specialized paintings conservation equipment.

Qualifications

  • A degree, post-graduate diploma, OR master's degree in Art Conservation and other relevant academic program specializing in paintings conservation.
  • At least 6 months of practical, hands-on experience in the treatment and handling of artworks. This experience can have been attained through internship/practicum placements during time of study, or through subsequent work experience.
  • Strong proficiency in colour theory and colour matching is required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
  • Working at Heights Certification and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification are required and must be completed during first few weeks of employment if not attained previously.
  • First Aid training will be considered an asset.
  • Practical experience working with murals or wall paintings is an asset.
  • Strong conservation writing and documentation skills are required.
  • Strong communication skills to promote safe site-work is required.

Working Conditions: This position will require field work and there will be exposure to chemicals and solvents, occasional working from heights. The incumbent will require personal protective equipment.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: Pay Grade 7 $36.60 - 48.97 per hour

Hours of work: Standard 35-hour work week.

Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3-week cycle.
