Safety Advisor

Stevens Group of Companies is a privately held, third-generation family business headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The group includes a design-build construction company (B.D. Stevens Ltd.), a ready-mix concrete supply, long-term care homes, a commercial door and frame supplier, various commercial real estate properties, and more.
The Safety Advisor will work with the B.D. Stevens operations around Halifax Regional Municipality with occasional travel within Nova Scotia and New Brunswick as required.
Role Description
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Safety Advisor will oversee and administer Health & Safety programs across Stevens Group. This includes delivering safety training, identifying gaps in programs, improving policies and procedures, and performing inspections and audits at facilities and job sites. You’ll also play a key role in the continued use and optimization of the safety management software (SALUS) and will work closely with the division leaders to support their unique safety needs.
This is a newly created role designed to work in collaboration with the existing Safety Advisor . Together, you will take a collaborative approach in managing safety across multiple sites and organizations, ensuring consistent standards and proactive engagement with both field and office teams.
Your Core Responsibilities
- Ensure all employees have current safety training relevant to their position.
- Maintain a database of employee safety training records.
- Keep safety programs and manuals complete with all necessary SWPs/SJPs and up to date with legislation.
- Make safety manuals accessible and train staff on revisions or updates.
- Manage internal and external COR audits where applicable.
- Perform site visits to review hazards and implement solutions.
- Ensure tools and equipment meet applicable safety standards.
- Conduct regular spot inspections and support managers and employees in addressing corrective actions.
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents or near misses.
- Assist with Workers’ Compensation Board claims as required.
- Support supervisors and employees in using SALUS effectively.
- Conduct project close-out performance reviews.
Your Qualifications
You’re an experienced safety professional who combines technical knowledge with a collaborative, educational approach. You can operate independently while building trust with site crews and office staff. You’re proactive, organized, and confident in coaching others toward safer practices.
- Experience: 3+ years in a Health & Safety role (construction experience an asset).
- Education: Training or education in Health & Safety; certifications/designations such as CRSP, CHSC, CSS, and/or HSP preferred.
- Skills: Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
- Traits: Approachable, constructive, not authoritarian, with a self-starter mindset.
- Other: Clean driving record and ability to travel.
