About the role

Cermaq British Columbia is currently seeking permanent full-time Saltwater Aquaculture Technicians to join and support out Saltwater Teams. This position will be based on our sea sites on the coasts of Vancouver Island, BC. You will be reporting directly to the Site Manager and will be primarily responsible for working as part of a team to conduct the day-to-day farm operations, including feeding, animal husbandry and security of fish stocks. We provide bus and boat transport from communities to our farms.

A Day on The Job

  • Providing support to the sea site through general husbandry operations to ensure a healthy lifecycle of the fish from smolt intakes to growth, to harvest
  • Applying appropriate feeding strategies to grow and manage fish welfare, either through hand feeding or auto-feeding techniques, this includes feed regimes, feed rates and feed monitoring
  • Monitoring fish activity, conducting environmental and plankton monitoring and sampling activities to ensure proper fish welfare
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and bio secure site by performing simple maintenance, setting up sites, and closing sites
  • Operating heavy machinery such as boats, forklifts and capstans
  • Work a camp shift of 8 days on, 6 days off, 10 hours per day

Qualifications & Skills

  • Although prior experience in aquaculture is preferred, it is not required, we will train you
  • Aquaculture Certificate/Diploma, or a science-based degree in Aquaculture, Biology, Marine Biology, or Fisheries Resource Management is preferred but not required
  • Valid certificates for First Aid, Forklift, PCOC or SVOP, and MED A3 are an asset
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift or move heavy items up to 30lbs. (20kg)
  • Well-developed communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Strong teamwork and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Enjoy working outdoors, in all weather conditions in remote work locations
  • Enthusiastic mindset with a strong desire to grow and develop new skills
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing
