About the Role:
The Data Technician is responsible for converting and integrating geospatial mining data from various formats and sources into a cohesive GIS environment. This role demands a unique blend of GIS expertise to aid in data interpretation, decision-making, and presentation.
Core Duties
- Convert and integrate geospatial mining data from diverse sources and formats into standardized formats and geospatial coordinate reference systems. Import/Export client data using process-specific workflows.
- Analyze client data and use critical thinking to guide decisions that will deliver an exceptional product for our clients
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and spatial integrity during the conversion and integration process.
- Present complex geospatial data in an easily understandable format for stakeholders and decision-makers.
- Collaborate with peers in researching and developing techniques for improving processes and content.
- Ensure project deadlines are met with high-quality deliverables.
- Create accurate and visually appealing 2D maps to showcase features such as mine boundaries, local infrastructure, proximity to other mine sites, etc.
Education/Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Geography, Geology, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on GIS.
- Basic proficiency in GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS). Proficiency in 3D software; Houdini, C4D (or similar) is a bonus.
- Less than 2 years of experience in data management, GIS, or a related field.
Core Competencies
Academic:
- Basics of Geospatial Data: Understanding of geospatial data concepts, including geographic coordinate systems and mapping principles.
- GIS 101: Fundamental knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their applications in data mapping and analysis.
- Basic programming skills and understanding of databases, particularly as they relate to data manipulation and query languages like SQL.
- GIS Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS for data entry and simple spatial analysis.
- Data Validation Techniques: Skills in validating geospatial data for accuracy and consistency.
- Data Conversion: Experience converting data between different formats (e.g., CSV to shapefile) using GIS tools.
- Map Creation: Ability to create basic maps and visualizations using GIS software.
- Team Collaboration: Experience working within project teams, understanding requirements, and contributing to data-related tasks.
- Knowledge of geology and/or the mining industry is an asset.
Technical Skills
- GIS Tools and Software: Proficiency in using GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) for data manipulation and mapping.
- Data Entry and Cleaning: Skills in accurate data entry and basic cleaning techniques to ensure data quality. Knowledge of effective data organization, storage, and retrieval within a GIS environment.
- Basic Cartography: Be able to create basic 2D maps for use in 3D models including simple features such as project property boundaries, country names and borders, location labels, and features such as legends and north arrows.
- Experience working with geospatial data, including understanding data structures, attribute tables, and spatial relationships. Experience in georeferencing raster and vector datasets to real-world coordinates.
- Geospatial Data Visualization: Ability to create straightforward geospatial visualizations and maps. Familiarity with common GIS file formats, such as shapefiles, GeoTIFFs, and KML/KMZs. Awareness of challenges associated with file format conversions and the ability to troubleshoot and address issues.
- Point, line, and polygon digitizing: Digitizing point, line, and polygon features on discrete areas on a map or image and capturing their coordinates in the GIS. This could include landmarks, infrastructure assets, or other point, line, and polygon-based data.
- Basic programming skills, preferably Python; ability to alter simple codes and use them to create automations and efficiencies.
Professional Skills:
- Attention to Detail: Keen observation skills to ensure high data quality and accuracy.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and solve basic issues related to data validation and conversion without having to constantly seek input or assistance.
- Communication: Effective communication of findings and data issues to team members, supervisors, and other department members.
- Time Management: Managing time efficiently to meet project deadlines.
- Adaptability: Willingness to learn new tools and adapt to project requirements.
What we Offer:

- Competitive salary; $67,500 - 75,000/year
Terms of Employment:
Location: Remote. Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
