Position Summary
The Town of Milton Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for the part-time seasonal positions of Aquatic Instructor to provide quality swimming lesson instruction at Town operated pools.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach effective and engaging swimming lessons using learner-centered approaches that appeal to a variety of preferred learning styles
  • Coach and teach participants of all ages and abilities using age-appropriate activities and techniques; adapt teaching approaches to the specific needs and abilities of each participant
  • Evaluate and record skill performance and progress of participants using the continuous evaluation approach throughout each program
  • Supervise participants and maintain complete vigilance to minimize risks, and be ready to respond at all times
  • Enforce the pool rules through communication with participants as required; educate participants about safe behaviour at the pool and during lessons
  • Follow policies and procedures as outlined in the staff manual in all decision making, program planning and public relations
  • Establish positive relationships and work cooperatively with staff and participants in maintaining a high level of morale and ensuring clear communication
  • Report all minor and major accidents, problems, disturbances, incidents and site damage to your supervisor, ensuring all appropriate forms are filled out accurately and completely
  • Comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with department objectives.

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 10 education
  • Hold Bronze Medallion certification
  • Current Bronze Cross certification
  • Current Lifesaving Society, Swim Instructor certification
  • Current Lifesaving and EFA Instructor certification
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR C certification
  • High Five PHCD Certification
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check
  • Strong Customer service, leadership and organizational skills
  • Effective Teaching skills
  • Knowledge of quality aquatic program standards, qualifications
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to work well and independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to develop, execute, and modify lesson plans
  • Proficient swimming ability
  • Ability to complete 400 metre swim within 11 minutes
  • Ability to recover 10lb object and submerged person from 3m depth

Preferred Qualifications

  • Volunteer experience in Aquatics
  • Background in competitive swimming
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities
  • Current National Lifeguard

Government Administration

Milton is a town in Southern Ontario, Canada, and part of the Halton Region in the Greater Toronto Area. Between 2001 and 2011 Milton was the fastest growing municipality in Canada, with a 71.4% increase in population from 2001 to 2006 and another 56.5% increase from 2006 to 2011. In 2016, Milton's census population was 110,128 with an estimated growth to 228,000 by 2031. It remained the fastest growing community in Ontario but was deemed to be the sixth fastest growing in Canada at that time.
