About Us

Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS) is dedicated to moving safe and ethical animal research forward for Western and its affiliates by offering the following services:

  • Oversight of city-wide animal care facilities
  • Animal Use Protocol processing for the ACC
  • Mandated Animal User Training
  • Institutional-and-affiliate-wide research support

Responsibilities

The Student Veterinarian provides auxiliary services under the direct supervision of a CVO-licensed veterinarian in compliance with all relevant protocols, guidelines, and regulations. The role will work as an approved and institutionally trained veterinary designate to support clinical veterinary duties and pre- and post-approval monitoring activities, while further developing their laboratory animal medicine knowledge and training. The Student Veterinarian, under the direct supervision of a CVO-licensed veterinarian, may apply and strengthen their knowledge of laboratory animal medicine, surgery and care as an auxiliary to support animal welfare and to contribute to the achievement of the unit’s strategic objectives.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Program
  • Demonstrated interest in laboratory animal medicine through undergraduate and veterinary training preferred

Experience:

  • Successful completion of Phase 1 of a DVM undergraduate program
  • Experience in a laboratory animal setting
  • Experience developing SOPs preferred
  • Experience with health monitoring programs; disease response strategies; rodent breeding programs and strategies preferred
  • Experience at a research facility with a large and diverse biomedical program preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the regulatory environment governing animal research in Ontario and Canada
  • Knowledge of best practices for handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing animal research
  • Proficient at referencing expertise through researching, comparative analysis and information synthesis in order to make informed contributions to veterinary decision-making and documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong, collegial relationships with colleagues, researchers, Animal Care leaders and their staffs
  • High degree of professionalism with the ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management within a highly confidential context
  • Verbal communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development with a desire to maintain a current working knowledge of laboratory animal medicine
  • Ability to excel in a fluid and challenging, fast-paced work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and follow through on work assignments
  • Ability to apply regulations or professional standards to own work
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s activities
  • Possess a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
  • Demonstrated integrity and acts in accordance with Western's professional, ethical and procedural framework
