We're looking for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our Legal team in Montreal. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, Head of Litigation and Enterprise Risk, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing practical legal advice to various Lightspeeders on the following legal matters: employment, litigation, intellectual property, and privacy matters.
What you'll be doing:
- Serves as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders, including executive leadership, particularly on Lightspeed's People & Culture, Marketing, Product & Technology, Security, and Information Systems / Technology teams.
- A key advisor and partner to the People & Culture team who handles employment litigation, advises on employee contracting matters, contributes to Company policy-making and employee training, and other employment-related matters.
- Mentors and works closely with senior People Business Partners on various employment-related issues.
- Assists with management of global litigation matters, including preparing evidence (as needed), overseeing external litigation counsel, and informing litigation strategy.
- Assists with management of the Company's global intellectual property ("IP") portfolio, and contributes to the Company's IP policy-making, programs, and strategy.
- Contributes to the maturity of the Company's privacy program, manages privacy-related requests (internally and externally), and drives strategic privacy initiatives forward.
- Develops processes, procedures, and programs for innovative delivery of legal services to ensure the efficiency and scalability of the Legal function.
- Exposure to other areas of legal practice at Lightspeed are likely and preference will be given to candidates with a desire for a well-rounded experience and a willingness to take on challenges in new areas.

What you need to bring:
We're a legal team of 20 people located in Canada, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. This is an exciting opportunity to work at a dynamic and agile organization, and to work with a strategic-minded, best-in-class Legal team that empowers you to make an impact through individual contributions.
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
- Licensed to practice law in Canada and/or the United States.
- 3-5+ years of legal practice in a combination of in-house and private-practice environments, preferably supporting a SaaS technology company.
- Extensive experience in employment litigation and handling employment-related matters.
- Experience with managing litigation or other dispute resolution matters.
- Experience maturing and managing privacy programs, including developing and driving privacy-focused strategic initiatives.
- Familiarity with different types of IP assets and related licenses, including open source software, patents, etc.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. French is a strong asset. As a global company with employees and clients outside of Quebec, fluency in English as a working language is required for this position.
