Job Title: Packaging Mechanic

Location: Pickering, ON

Work Hours: 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday

About the role:

The Senior Packaging Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the development and execution of an automation management program that ensures the reliability, safety, and efficiency of packaging machinery, conveyors, HMIs, and related systems. This role manages preventive maintenance, inspections, life-cycle requirements, and compliance with health, safety, GPP, SOPs, and industry regulations. The position includes supervision of troubleshooting and repair activities, vendor and contractor management to drive cost savings and timely delivery.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of an automation management program, including preventive maintenance, inspections, and life-cycle requirements.
  • Supervise operation, troubleshooting, and repair of automated packaging machinery, conveyors, HMIs, and related systems.
  • Conduct and document regular inspections, ensuring compliance with health, safety, GPP, SOPs, and industry codes.
  • Manage contractor and vendor relationships, including negotiating contracts to optimize cost savings and delivery.
  • Coordinate and monitor activities of contract suppliers, review service contracts, and verify contractor work and invoicing against contract terms.
  • Prepare, track, and monitor automation expenses and payments.
  • Generate and present regular reports and reviews on automation expenditures, contracts, and equipment performance.
  • Work with the compliance team to ensure equipment meets client specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate and ensure new equipment supports current and future production and infrastructure needs.
  • Partner with Operations to identify process improvement opportunities, assess risks, and oversee implementation of recommendations.
  • Guide and oversee documentation workflows for automation maintenance, record-keeping, and compliance tracking.

Job Requirements:

  • College diploma or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of automation experience in cannabis, pharmaceutical, food, or other regulated industries.
  • Proven expertise in automation systems, packaging machinery, conveyors, and HMI-based equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in vendor management, contract negotiation, and budget oversight.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to supervise staff and coordinate external contractors.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills with a track record of improving equipment reliability and performance.
  • Strong understanding of compliance standards and ability to collaborate with regulatory teams.

Must be willing to undergo a background check in accordance with local laws and regulations. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
