Our Environmental Services Group (ESG) provides our clients with expertise in climate change, environmental assessment & management, noise & vibration, social impact management, sustainable development design, and water resources. With your help, we can build extraordinary things that co-exist, and benefit local communities and habitats.

We are seeking an Environmental Analyst, Scientist or Planner to join our team of talented environmental professionals in our St. John’s, NL office. Hatch’s Environment, People and Places (EP&P) Group focuses on providing our clients to solutions to their environmental and social challenges. The group works directly with clients or in collaboration with other service areas within Hatch, in developing new business opportunities.

The successful applicant will support the team in a diverse range of environmental and social management matters including baseline studies, environmental and social impact assessment, permitting and approval applications, undertaking of audits and development of environmental management systems, predominantly within the infrastructure, natural resources, mining, power and energy sectors.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Environmental Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or equivalent in related discipline;
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience;
  • Experience in the application of natural heritage policies, protocols and environmental legislation;
  • Environmental and social impact assessment process experience;
  • Knowledge of environmental and social due diligence an asset;
  • Flexibility to travel periodically;
  • Knowledge of French an advantage.

The Role:

  • Contribute to or manage baseline environmental studies, environmental assessments, environmental management strategies, and plans including research, report writing, field work, as well as stakeholder and regulatory consultation;
  • Collect and synthesize scientific literature, existing data sets and secondary source material for technical reports;
  • Identify potential environmental impacts as a result of land use changes and recommend suitable mitigation strategies to avoid and / or reduce potential impacts;
  • Lead and support permitting, and approvals related to the natural environment (e.g., Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Impact Assessment Act);
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of existing and emerging regulatory requirements, wildlife and vegetation assessment methodologies, and best practices;
  • Coordinate work with other environmental specialists (i.e., noise, air, archaeology, built heritage, fisheries, terrestrial ecologists, etc.).
  • Deliver high-quality environmental services to agreed budgets and deadlines;

  • An ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and integrated team environment;
  • Experience working in a fast paced, consulting environment;
  • Desire to eventually take on the responsibilities of business development and project management;
  • Excellent written communication skills;
  • An ability to be flexible, learn and perform challenging tasks outside their area of skills and experience; and
  • Ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Flexibility to travel periodically;
  • Knowledge of French an advantage.
