About the role

Reporting to the Vice President, Clinical and Chief Medical Officer, at Unity Health Toronto, the Senior Project Manager (SPM) provides an integrated approach to project management including tools, processes and cross-functional activities. The Senior Project Director is a corporate resource designed to support and consult with clinical programs, support services and Medical Affairs, fostering integration and change activities. The SPM will involve other departments such as Finance, Decision Support, Human Resources, Communications, Patient Experience, Safety and Risk to ensure that initiatives are executed so Unity Health delivers the best care experiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership for complex initiatives across the network, in both Clinical Programs and Medical Affairs, including opportunity identification, initiative design, planning, facilitation, management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation;
  • Facilitating and managing improvement, change management and integration projects, including Kaizen, 6S events, metrics development, process and Value Stream Mapping and other Lean/Six Sigma tools and methods;
  • Working in conjunction with other team members to ensure linkages between different initiatives are appropriately identified and managed;
  • Formulates a sophisticated framework to ensure initiatives are fully developed and implemented consistently throughout the full span of project activities, based on project goals/directives;
  • Leads the collaboration with relevant parties in the development of evidence based measurement and metrics to benchmark performance against industry standards and peer organizations;
  • Documents and analyzes key performance activities, reports, results and accomplishment of quality improvement initiatives, with a focus on data quality/optimal project implementation and the timely achievement of project goals, while making recommendations to ensure projects meet targeted outcomes;
  • Provide expert level improvement knowledge and lead capacity building in improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, IHI) across the network to build a culture of continuous, sustainable improvement;
  • Promotes a teamwork environment where staff from diverse multilingual and multicultural backgrounds can interact productively and efficiently, while providing recognition, feedback and ways to motivate project staff;
  • Profiles and represents improvement successes via abstract, poster and manuscript development and submission; attends conferences as required;
  • Supports the development of a coordinated, seamless and integrated health system for our patients and residents;
  • Acts as the key representative on committees, large scale network and other project related initiatives, as required to advance project goals and the network mission, values and goals;
  • Participates in department/Network and stakeholder meetings, workgroups, committees, advisory groups, council and/or other relevant meetings which may have an impact on the project /network initiatives;
  • Initiates and develops respectful and collaborative working relationships with peers/associates across the network to foster a more productive and satisfying environment for staff, patients and visitors to the network;
  • Initiates and develops effective working relationships with external professional associations and peers in other health care institutions to keep up to date on current/emerging legislation, developments and trends.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in related field (Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Quality, Engineering, Public Health, etc) required;
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in a health care environment required;
  • Expertise in quality improvement including the IHI Model for Improvement, change management and process redesign concepts including Lean/Six Sigma required;
  • Formal training in project management with PMP certification preferred;
  • Demonstrated excellent experience in facilitation, collaboration and negotiation with multiple stakeholders/service providers required;
  • Demonstrated skills in developing evaluation frameworks/measurement plans and data analysis including the ability to develop monitor and utilize performance indicators to support ongoing improvement efforts;
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze complex problems, interpret data in support of process redesign and to deal with situations where information is difficult to obtain, complex, or ambiguous;
  • Demonstrated ability to drive data related changes i.e. gather and integrate data from disparate sources to unearth trends and patterns; generate insights; present and explain information; and suggest improvements;
  • Proficient in MS Office: Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, Word and the ability to process map;
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with people from all disciplines; at all levels of experience and at all levels of the organization;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate information/ideas, in a manner that is easily understood by others required;
  • Effective problem recognition and problem solving skills with the ability to deal with situations where information is difficult to obtain, complex or ambiguous required;
  • Demonstrated success in providing leadership in a way that facilitates effective teamwork, highly developed problem solving, communication and negotiation skills;
  • Knowledge and ability to facilitate meetings, conduct effective briefings and presentations, and to develop consensus, both internally and externally, with people who reflect the full range of diversity in objectives;
  • Detail oriented with excellent analytical skills related to proposal development/project management required;
  • Demonstrates expertise in understanding operational excellence, quality improvement, change management and process redesign concepts including lean/six sigma required;
  • Strong understanding of provincial health care, clinical processes with ability to use clinical data for improvement required;
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a fast pace environment and motivate project staff and others to achieve a common goal within established timeframes and targets required;
  • Ability to work well independently, collaboratively as a team player with a variety of staff/stakeholders to undertake detailed analysis, report generation, and project implementation required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the Network's Mission and Values.
