Job Synopsis

This part-time position is part of MCC Picks Up, supporting the logistical operations of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ontario Thrift Shops in the Region of Waterloo and provides a high-level of customer service to donors and potential partners.

The Home Pick-Up Associate offers thoughtful donor engagement, safe transportation of donations, and effective coordination with three local MCC Thrift Shops – Elmira, New Hamburg, and Kitchener. The role requires a positive attitude, flexibility, and a strong commitment to donor care while providing hands-on donation and furniture pick-up services at donor residences.

The Associate works closely with the Thrift Project Lead, fellow MCC Picks Up staff, and shop teams to ensure smooth distribution and flow of donated goods. Collaboration with various team members is essential, particularly regarding routing, scheduling, pick-ups and drop offs.

Due to the nature of this project, days and hours may fluctuate as prime home pick-up times are established. This is a part-time, 18.75 hour per week role with potential for more hours that includes some early mornings, early evenings and Saturdays.

MCC Ontario Thrift Shops provide 30% of MCCO’s annual revenue. These shops sell donated items and are managed at the local level through a team consisting of management staff and volunteers. Each shop seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of each MCC Thrift Shop.

This role is based in Kitchener, with travel to donor residences within the Waterloo Region and MCC Ontario Thrift Shops in Kitchener, New Hamburg and Elmira.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Background Check upon hire.

Required

  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative while at the same time willing to work as a team with home pick-up staff, shop staff, thrift support staff, and volunteers
  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions
  • Sensitivity and awareness of cultural, racial, economic, and socially diverse communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse experiences and life situations
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and customer service skills with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and through email.
  • Ability to communicate timelines frequently and effectively to staff and donors.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently
  • Experience in moving furniture
  • Valid ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license, ability to drive and dock cube truck into loading dock
  • Requires about 6 hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday
  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level
  • Sitting may be required only intermittently and occasionally
  • Occasional shifts working in the office, thrift shops, or storage facility
  • Smart phone and computer skills (MS Office and web-based applications, website maintenance)
  • Comfort level dealing with cash and payment processing systems
  • Healthy balance of patience, humour and energy
  • Heart for justice, active peacemaking and global understanding

Preferred

  • Delivery truck experience
  • Tow Motor/Pump Cart experience
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Familiarity with Waterloo Region – Towns and Neighbourhoods
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Health Canada Regulations, and other legislation relating to a safe work environment

Key Responsibilities

Logistics

  • Safely driving truck between donor locations and MCC Ontario Thrift Shops and Storage facilities
  • Maintain a customer centric culture – create a positive experience in all interactions with donors, volunteers, and colleagues
  • Work with shop teams to maintain an efficient transportation schedule between donors and shops
  • Load and unload appropriate donations with pallets, gaylords etc.
  • Operate shop trucks to pick-up donations and transport product to shops or landfill / recyclers
  • Ensure customer payments and receipts are completed (as needed)
  • Work with shop teams to ensure donations are safely unloaded, stored, and tracked
  • Assist at the Thrift Shops when pick-up days are light taking direction from shop leadership
  • Some early morning and alternating Saturday shifts are required
  • Daily truck tasks – example: checklist, gas, landfill runs, etc.
  • Assist with truck cleanliness and basic maintenance

General

  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with donors
  • Responsible for maintaining logs, recording data, and flagging trends (overflow, landfill volumes, missed donations, etc.)
  • Assist with developing relationships with key multi-residential developments and community partners to grow this project
  • Gather photos and donor stories and support simple marketing updates for MCC Picks Up
  • Assist with routing, scheduling, communications, update online booking calendars and assist with troubleshooting donor booking issues.
  • Assist with storage and ecommerce solutions
  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization including proper lifting techniques and using the tools available for movement of goods
  • Assist with refuse and the handling of donated goods as needed.
  • Assist with the training of new MCC Picks Up staff

Other

  • Share the news about MCC Thrift and the MCC Ontario Thrift Network in the community
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized

Salary Details

Base salary: $23,744. Salary stated is the annual total. Pay deposits are made monthly.

Benefits

Compensation includes a company-paid benefit package, which starts on day 1 of employment. Group benefits are employer-paid and include supplemental medical/dental/vision, life insurance, AD&D, global medical assistance, EAP and RRSP contributions matched.

LTD premiums are the responsibility of the employee and are paid through payroll deduction.
