Join the Fun! The SHOAL Centre, a community centre for seniors 55+ is seeking an engaging, knowledgeable, and safety-focused Contract Fitness Instructor to lead a variety of wellness and fitness programming for older adults. This contract role offers the opportunity to lead programs such as total body conditioning, cardio dance, chair fit and chair yoga. Opportunity to develop and introduce new classes, shape meaningful programming, and make a positive impact in the lives of seniors in this energetic social hub of the community.
Days/Hours of Work: Mondays, Wednesdays, 9:00 am to 12:00 p,m, and Thursdays 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. With opportunities to develop additional programs (e.g., Saturdays).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Safety & Risk Management
- Adapt fitness programming to accommodate diverse mobility levels and health needs (e.g., arthritis, stroke recovery, osteoporosis, chronic conditions).
- Prioritize safety in all program design and delivery, including fallprevention strategies and monitoring exertion levels.
- Conduct environmental assessments to reduce fall risks and ensure accessibility.
Instruction & Participant Engagement
- Provide clear, strong verbal cueing suitable for older adult learners.
- Foster an inclusive, welcoming class atmosphere.
- Offer modifications and progressions based on age, common conditions and participant feedback.
- Support participation, confidence, and positive class experiences.
Program Delivery & Development
- Deliver established classes, including chair fit, cardio dance, and total body conditioning.
- Create new programming that aligns with the needs of the SHOAL community, emphasizing balance, strength, and mobility.
- Ensure classes are evidencebased, progressive, and tailored to the 55+ population.
Class Setup & Environment
- Prepare equipment, stations, and room layout to enhance safety and accessibility.
- Select appropriate music and maintain comfortable sound levels.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of equipment and fitness spaces.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- BCRPA Older Adult Certification.
- Additional fitness or group exercise certification(s).
- Experience leading fitness programming for seniors or in a wellness environment.
- Experience adapting exercises for participants with mobility limitations or chronic health conditions.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of balance, mobility, and strength-training principles for older adults.
- Excellent communication and verbal cueing skills; ability to project voice clearly.
- Ability to create supportive, engaging learning environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and trust with seniors.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Commitment to safety, inclusion, and participants' overall wellbeing.
