The Opportunity
The Financial Accountant provides the technical, administrative, and operational support required for the full cycle of Banff Centre financial processes. The Financial Accountant serves as primary back-up for the Accounts Receivable Administrator including the cashiering duties as part of the Accounts Receivable Administrator role.
The Financial Accountant does not have any direct supervisory responsibility but provides coordinating of tasks/activities and mentoring to the Accounting Generalist, Accounts Payable Administrator and Accounts Receivable Administrator positions by posting and approving entries.
The Financial Accountant interacts on a regular basis with both internal and external customers of Banff Centre.
Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Accounting and Financial Reporting, below are some key accountabilities:
- Assists Financial Services staff with training, technical accounting questions, policy and procedure questions, and troubleshooting accounting systems issues.
- Assists with month end close out processes and journal entries.
- Investigates and takes other action as needed to train and respond to questions on a wide variety of accounting, policy and procedure, and transaction processing matters from departments.
- Understands how general ledger transactions flow through multiple financial systems and administers accordingly.
- Investigates, journalizes and completes monthly bank reconciliations and other balance sheet reconciliations, and ensures that all reconciling items are resolved.
- Processes incoming/outgoing payments including wires, EFTs, pre-authorised debits and foreign payments, and duly records all bank transactions.
- Handles stop payments, void cheques and cheque payment queries.
- Prepares, compiles and/or processes a wide variety of documents, reports, tax returns and financial transactions such as share donations, journal entries, GST tax returns, other tax returns/remittances, etc., requiring the ability to identify issues, raise questions, and use good judgement to proactively resolve those issues/questions with departments and within Financial Services and to meet reporting deadlines.
- Assists with the interim and year-end external audit processes.
- Reviews/posts month end IDT journal entries and interdepartmental expense allocations.
- Performs other month end tasks such as compiling, analyzing, and journalizing travel expenses, prepaid drawdown, online film sales cash receipt, and endowment contributions.
- Reviews and verifies incoming cheque log for bank deposits.
- Carries out additional duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
- 5+ years related experience
- Bachelor degree preferably in accounting actively working towards a CPA designation
- Equivalent in education and experience will be considered
- Previous experience with the administration of accounts receivable, cashiering, and/or accounts payable is preferred
- Committed to professional service delivery
- Organized, flexible and comfortable dealing with change
- Extremely accurate and highly attentive to detail
- Able to multi-task efficiently and effectively
- Thorough knowledge of full cycle accounting practices as well as all applicable policies and procedures and accounting/control principles
- Strong computing skills and is confident with desk-top software
- Effective communication skills
- Works effectively in a team environment
Employment Terms and Benefits
- In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, salaried support staff position, subject to a 6 month probation period.
- The annual salary for this position is between $60,551.40 and $63,572.60, depending on experience, based on working 35 hours per week.
