Position Summary:
Instruct and guide 10-16 first- and second-year undergraduate students in a practical course on research techniques and theory in Microbiology and grade them in various assessments such as participation, lab performance, lab reports, lab books, flow charts, quizzes, presentations and other assignments. Teaching assistants are expected to read the week’s material and watch the pre-lab video before the Tuesday afternoon lab sessions. They will attend a TA meeting with the instructor on Tuesday before the lab session (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm). TAs will be present with their students in the Duff C-floor labs on Tuesday (2:30 pm to 5:00 pm) and the follow-up lab on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm. TAs will be required to explain and demonstrate microbiological techniques and theory to the students. TAs are responsible for instructing the students on safe laboratory procedures and performing a safety check of the lab cubicle at the end of the session. In addition, TAs will respond to student questions through email and/or office hours. In the event of extraordinary circumstances beyond the University’s control, the content, schedule and/or evaluation scheme in this course is subject to change. In this case, TA duties would be adjusted accordingly,
Qualifications:
A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student at the Master’s or Doctoral level, at McGill University, employed to assist a course Supervisor. Have a B.Sc. or B.A. in Microbiology and Immunology. Preferably would have taken MIMM 211 and MIMM 212 or equivalent during their bachelors degree. Preferably a graduate student in Microbiology & Immunology.
Language Requirements: Effective communication skills in English are essential. Effective communication skill in French is desirable.
