About the role

The position is at a humanitarian organization. The Human Resources Director (HRD) provides critical leadership in attaining our strategic goals. As a member of the Management Team, the HRD develops and implements HR strategy across all aspects of the company, including talent, change management, employee relations, workforce planning, total rewards, learning and development, and culture.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and implement our HR strategy in alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Lead change management efforts that foster organizational transformation and sustainable growth.
  • Utilize HR analytics and workforce insights to guide strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Provide proactive guidance and leadership on employee relations, compliance, and HR best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director’s Office, Management Team, and EDI Strategic Advisor to uphold our Employment Philosophy and HR vision.

Workforce & Talent Development

  • Oversee workforce planning, performance management, and talent development initiatives.
  • Design and administer programs focused on recruitment, retention, mobility, and career growth.
  • Manage total rewards, compensation, and benefits practices to meet evolving workforce expectations.
  • Promote employee engagement, health, and wellness initiatives that address mental, physical, social, financial, and organizational well-being.
  • Ensure the implementation of strong duty-of-care policies and comprehensive learning and development programs.

People Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the HR team while fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Effectively manage departmental budgets, staffing, and resources.
  • Provide coaching and support to managers and leaders through organizational change.
  • Identify, implement, and maintain HR best practices to reduce risks and ensure compliance.
  • Lead or assist with investigations and responses to critical incidents.

Partnership & Representation

  • Serve as an active member of the Management Team and represent HR to our Board, HR Committee, and international HR networks.
  • Collaborate with our global partners to align HR strategies and practices across the movement.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with external organizations, NGOs, government agencies, and professional HR associations.
  • May travel domestically or internationally to support field operations and HR coordination.

Qualifications

Required

  • Education: Post-secondary degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Business Administration, or a related discipline
  • At least 10 years of progressive HR leadership experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a senior HR Director capacity
  • Proven expertise in strategic HR leadership, including workforce planning, organizational design, and change management
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HR disciplines, including recruitment, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and employment law
  • Demonstrated ability to apply principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Anti-Oppression / Anti-Racism (AOAR)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret HR data and metrics to drive strategic decisions
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and influence skills
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written) and working proficiency in French

Preferred

  • Professional HR certification (such as CHRP, CHRL, CPHR, SPHR, or SPHRi)
  • Experience within the non-profit, NGO, or international development sectors
  • Understanding of Canadian employment legislation across multiple provinces
  • Background in total rewards, succession planning, or HR systems implementation
  • Experience working in unionized or international matrixed environments
  • Familiarity with our humanitarian principles and global HR frameworks
