About The State of the Snowpack Public Safety Society
Each winter, the snowpack tells a story — a narrative unfolding over time. Every wind event, every snowfall, and every shift in weather becomes a new chapter in the evolving tale of the season. This is the story of the snowpack, shared with communities across the mountains.
State of the Snowpack bridges the gap between Avalanche Canada’s regional forecasts and the local knowledge exchanged through the InfoEx by guides and avalanche professionals. The goal is to provide snowpack analysis that is as local as it gets, in clear and accessible terms.
The vision is simple: reduce backcountry avalanche incidents, casualties, and rescues through the sharing of detailed, community-specific snowpack information. By drawing on the expertise of local guiding and forecasting professionals, backcountry users can make more informed decisions — and return home safely each day.
SOTS delivers this knowledge through free, community-based avalanche awareness events held across mountain towns every winter. Each season, the network of chapters continues to expand, reaching more communities and bringing the story of the snowpack to more people than ever before.
