About the role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Authority to take photographs and video within Multimatic. Usage of photos is restricted to internal use only and/ or sending externally as part of job-related correspondence
  • Delegate and supervise the day-to-day manufacturing engineering activities / tasks.
  • Coordinate and oversee general housekeeping for the manufacturing engineering department.
  • Responsible for the oversight of orientation and training of new employees.
  • Provide training on work instructions and any job-related procedures.
  • Monitor employee performance relative to the acceptance of responsibility, communication, problem solving ability, work habits, and safety behaviours. Complete appraisals as required.
  • Complete training effectiveness evaluations as required.
  • Issue disciplines as required (in conjunction with the department manager and human resources manager).
  • Assist departmental / employee concerns relating to manufacturing and/or processes.
  • In case of safety incidents or accidents administer first aid as required and complete the according investigation reports as per company procedure.
  • Assist in return-to-work planning for employees and facilitate the modified work program with the human resources department.
  • Ensure that all safety standards are met. Act upon observed unsafe working habits or safety hazards (i.e. corrective actions).
  • Ensure that the required department targets and timeline mile stones are met.
  • Maintain adherence to the established quality and scheduling standards.
  • Review the daily manufacturing engineering activities and instruct department employees in regard to priorities and deadlines.
  • Ensure that any trial runs where members of the manufacturing engineering department are involved are conducted in a controlled manner to avoid any confusion relating to part / component traceability.
  • Ensure the set-up verification ,first and last part inspection has been reviewed and approved by the production leadhands during pre production runs and handovers of new processes.
  • Assist in any non-production trial runs and ensure inspections and tests are performed as per the part control plan and maintain inspection and test status.
  • Maintain product inspection and test status using the established labeling instructions.
  • Alert the department manager of all quality and safety issues.
  • Identify non-conformances. Stop production if necessary and assist the purge and containment of all suspect material internally, externally, and any product that is in transit.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of department objectives and targets.
  • Follow all departmental and general procedures where applicable.
  • Ensure the accuracy of manufacturing bills of materials for all products (i.e. parent component relationship, part numbers, and quantity per, at 100% accuracy level).
  • Ensure the accuracy of work centre master files, routers, and standard run, and set up times, sub-contracted operations, and reporting points for back flushing for all products, at 100% accuracy level.
  • Co-ordinate the proper timing of ECN completion for engineering and ensure production is at the required engineering level.
  • Ensure accuracy of the part numbering system.
  • Develop and co-ordinate plant and equipment layout improvements, process improvements, die changes, and first off improvements.
  • Co-ordinate and follow up on the smooth introduction of new products, equipment or processes to the company and assist in selecting appropriate suppliers for subcontracted operations.
  • Research and pursue opportunities for improvement in the operation to increase MRD’s competitiveness.
  • Participate in the engineering change process by designing and updating Process Failure Mode Effects Analyses as needed.
  • Review all operator instructions and ensure the readiness of assembly equipment, packaging requirements, and completion of all manufacturing engineering tasks.
  • Maintain a daily presence on the production floor. Provide engineering support to assembly in the areas of ergonomic evaluations, methods improvement, the procurement and fabrication of equipment, and safety.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating equipment standards and required documents.
  • Research, investigate, and report manufacturing concerns for improvement of overall plant productivity. This includes process cost reductions and implementation of corrective actions to minimize process downtimes and rejects.
  • Advise Management of any potential problems and opportunities for improvement.
  • Complete additional projects as assigned.
  • Follow all departmental and general procedures where applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager and/or Department Manager.
  • Abide by all company safety rules, responsibilities, policies, and procedures including the legislative requirements of the OHSA.
  • Work in compliance and conform to the Environment and ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 standards.
  • Adopt, practice, and promote Kaizen principles; participate in Kaizen and GEAR activities. Encourage continuous improvement efforts within the department and ensure submission of individual and team GEARs to achieve one hundred percent participation.
  • Procures quotes from equipment and process tooling for new jobs or for existing equipment that will be re-purposed.
  • Supports preparation of reports and key measureable indicators each month.
  • Complete layered process audits as required.
  • Oversee onboarding and ensure orientations, including on the job training, are completed for new hires including co-op students.

Basic Requirements:

  • Completion of a college diploma or university degree in an engineering discipline. Mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a related field or discipline.
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing processes and systems.
  • Knowledge of government legislation relative to health and safety (i.e. OHSA, WHMIS).
  • Supervisory skills in the areas of health and safety, hiring, orientation, performance reviews, and disciplinary measures.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team; must be self-motivated.
  • Ability to coach, counsel, discipline, and motivate.
  • Good Technical Report writing abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and C.A.D.
  • Excellent problem-solving techniques and methods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
