VICE PRESIDENT, CORPORATE LEGAL (INSURANCE REGULATORY)
TORONTO
Join a dynamic and growing Corporate Legal Department. We are seeing a motivated, business-minded corporate insurance regulatory counsel to join our in-house legal team. This role will provide strategic legal support on insurance regulatory corporate and contractual matters including policy development, coverage analysis, and contract negotiation. The ideal candidate is a practical, solutions-oriented lawyer with deep expertise in the Canadian specialty property and casualty insurance sector, capable of delivering clear, actionable advice while supporting business growth and risk management. Accountabilities include:
- Draft, and advise on insurance policy wordings, forms, endorsements, and product language to ensure regulatory compliance, clarity, and alignment with business objectives, including collaboration with underwriting on new or updated offerings.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, agreements, and commercial documents, including reinsurance agreements, TPA agreements and program agreements.
- Engage with federal (OSFI) and provincial regulators on filings, licensing applications, inquiries, audits, approvals, rate filings, product approvals, and market conduct compliance.
- Offer expert legal counsel on insurance regulatory issues, including compliance with OSFI guidelines, provincial insurance acts, and related legislation.
- Conduct legal research, risk assessments, and impact analyses on emerging regulatory changes or coverage trends, providing proactive recommendations to business units.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in product development, underwriting, claims, marketing, and compliance to resolve legal and coverage issues efficiently.
- Support internal investigations, incident management, and dispute resolution related to regulatory, corporate, or coverage concerns.
- Promote a culture of compliance and ethical practices, including developing training materials and policies on regulatory and coverage matters.
- Identify opportunities to streamline legal processes and implement innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree from an accredited institution.
- Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario (or another Canadian provincial bar, with willingness to obtain Ontario accreditation).
- 10-15 years of post-call experience in insurance regulatory and corporate law, with significant in-house experience at an OSFI-regulated insurance company or financial institution.
- Demonstrated expertise in federal (OSFI) and provincial regulatory frameworks, including interactions with bodies such as the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) or equivalent in other provinces.
- Strong experience drafting and revising insurance policy wordings, forms, and related documents, with a focus on practical, clear, and customer friendly language.
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills, with a focus on practical, business-friendly outcomes.
- Proven ability to provide solutions-oriented advice in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments, balancing legal risks with commercial priorities.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and manage competing priorities
- Clear and direct communication style, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence and educate non-legal stakeholders.
Location:
- Downtown Toronto – Hybrid – 4 days per week in office
Compensation:
- The expected compensation in this position is within the range of $160,000 - $200,000
This salary range reflects the expected base compensation for the role across Canada. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities. Trisura provides this range in good faith in accordance with applicable legislation.
