Summer Research Student: Workforce Productivity in Seniors Care (Applied Research Technician II)

Position Summary

Project Title: Advancing Technology Integration for Workforce Productivity in Seniors’ Care

Red Deer Polytechnic has secured funding from Alberta Innovates for fully funded student researchers for Summer 2026 (May – August). The Summer Research Studentships (SRS) program provides students with paid experiential learning opportunities at post-secondary institutes in Alberta, enhancing their interest and success in health research and innovation.

Students will have the opportunity for skills development and networking through primary research activities, workshops, speaker series, career mentorship, and other events.

The objectives of the program are to:

  • Framework Enhancement: Build on the piloted technology integration framework to deepen adoption across Bethany Care Society facilities, focusing on practical steps for scaling.

  • Gap Analysis for Productivity: Identify barriers and opportunities in current workflows where technology can improve staff efficiency, reduce administrative burden, and enhance resident care.

  • Integration Strategies: Develop actionable strategies for embedding assistive and digital technologies into daily operations, ensuring alignment with clinical and organizational priorities.

  • Stakeholder Validation: Engage care teams and leadership to validate proposed strategies and ensure feasibility for real-world implementation. Implementation Roadmap Deliver a roadmap with prioritized actions, training needs, and measurable indicators for productivity gains.

  • Knowledge Translation: Prepare a report and presentation summarizing findings, recommendations, and scalability potential for Bethany Care Society and Alberta Innovates.

Position Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze the existing technology integration framework piloted at Bethany Care Society.
  • Conduct a gap analysis to identify barriers and opportunities for deeper integration of technology aimed at improving staff productivity and workflow efficiency.
  • Engage with care teams and leadership through interviews or focus groups to validate findings and gather practical insights.
  • Research and recommend strategies for scaling technology adoption, including training needs and workflow adjustments.
  • Prepare a final report and presentation summarizing recommendations, integration roadmap, and measurable productivity indicators.

Skills Students Will Gain:

  • Health System Innovation: Understanding technology adoption in seniors’ care and its impact on workforce productivity.

  • Process Analysis and Gap Identification: Techniques for evaluating workflows and identifying integration challenges.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Skills in conducting interviews, focus groups, and collaborative validation.

  • Strategic Planning: Developing actionable roadmaps for technology implementation and scaling.

  • Knowledge Translation: Communicating findings effectively to health system partners and leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Be currently registered at Red Deer Polytechnic; and

  • Be able to work in Canada

  • Available for work from May 4 – August 28, 2026 (~4 months)

  • Ability to work from 8:30am – 4:30pm from Monday to Friday

  • Proven strong work ethic, attendance record and productivity in an independent work environment demonstrated through previous employment, education, or volunteer experience.

  • Proven ability to work within a team and communicate positively supporting new and different ideas

  • Ability to complete work duties such as sitting, standing, and/ light physical effort over modest periods of time, with some opportunity for relief and task variety.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to review literature, write summaries and present findings.

An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits
