Health & Safety Lead & Training Coordinator

Overview:
The Health & Safety Lead & Training Coordinator is responsible for maintaining and supporting the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), environmental regulations, and company policies and procedures. This role also oversees employee training and development initiatives, ensuring standardized onboarding and skill development while addressing individual learning needs.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Manage the incident investigations, follow-up and reporting in Gensuite.
- Schedule EHS/Environmental Training.
- Work with Departments to Develop Procedures and Safe Work Instruction.
- Work with the Single Point Accountable personnel, who perform inspections.
- Report EHS Metrics, as required by Pactiv.
- Acts as Company liaison for Government officials.
- Develop Food Packaging procedures and GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices).
- May assist Plant Engineering in ensuring plant conforms to all ASI standards as requested.
- Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Plant Manager.

Responsibilities:
Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Responsibilities
- Provide technical support to Operations Management on OHSA and environmental compliance.
- Develop, update, and implement OHSA programs and policies.
- Conduct regular plant inspections and ensure adherence to federal, provincial, and local regulations.
- Maintain and manage accident and incident databases; perform trend analysis and reporting.
- Oversee workers’ compensation claims and liaise with government officials as required.
- Update and report monthly safety performance indexes.
- Communicate safety issues and updates to employees via meetings, memos, and other channels.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Committee Participation
- Serve as Co-Chair of the Joint Health & Safety Committee and member of the Safety Steering Committee.
- Coordinate committee meetings, attendance, and follow-up on action items.
- Maintain accurate records of committee activities.
Training Coordination
- Collaborate with Operations and HR to coordinate training for new hires and existing employees.
- Set start dates for trainees and assign trainers in consultation with leadership.
- Prepare and distribute training materials and new hire packets.
- Assist with onboarding and orientation processes.
- Schedule and support “Train the Trainer” sessions.
- Monitor training progress and ensure timely completion of assessments and reviews.
- Track current and future training needs to align with business requirements.
- Meet regularly with Team Leads and HR to assess and adjust training plans.
- Ensure adherence to safety guidelines and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Work directly with Supervisors to coordinate training activities without directing trainee assignments.
Other Duties
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by Human Resources, Operations and Plant Manager.
Qualifications:
Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Training Coordinator – Qualifications & Requirements
Core Knowledge & Education:
- Solid understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Ontario).
- Formal management training specific to EHS leadership roles.
- Proven ability to apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques for reporting EHS metrics.
- Familiarity with Regulation 851, Section 7 (Ontario) regarding equipment/process reviews and Management of Change.
Technical & Documentation Skills:
- Skilled in developing and writing Standard Work Instructions (SWIs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and WHMIS documentation.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including the ability to create and manage spreadsheets and training materials.
- Comfortable working in a Windows environment.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and train informally, adapting to various learning styles.
- Professional, positive attitude with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
- Able to work effectively with employees across all levels of the organization.
Experience & Organizational Abilities:
- 1–3 years of experience in manufacturing or production training.
- Detail-oriented with strong project coordination skills—able to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously through prioritization and follow-up.
- Capable of maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information appropriately.
- Flexible with work hours to accommodate training schedules.
- Experienced in creating training documents, single-point lessons, and forms tailored to operational needs.
