##Position Description
POSITION SUMMARY: To provide Pharmacy Technicians registered as Pharmacy Technician Interns with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP), the opportunity to develop their competence and demonstrate their preparedness to practice as Pharmacy Technicians while undertaking the licensing process with OCP. The Pharmacy Technician Intern will work under the supervision of and with delegation from a registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist. Pharmacy Technician Interns must complete the licensing process and become fully registered/licensed Pharmacy Technicians in Ontario within the timeframe indicated.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 2-year Community College Diploma Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program recognized by the CCAPP.
- Registered as a Pharmacy Technician Intern with the Ontario College of Pharmacists, in active pursuit of becoming a registered Pharmacy Technician in Ontario required
- Previous work experience as a Pharmacy Assistant is an asset
- Demonstrates strong customer service skills and works collaboratively with others
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Able to work in a group setting as well as independently
- Capable of taking direction and accepting constructive feedback
- Displays professionalism at all times
- Excellent ability to manage workload and prioritize with multiple competing tasks
- Excellent attendance and punctuality are crucial
- Must obtain and maintain professional liability insurance
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with hospital policy at all times.
- Always apply applicable departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
- Adhere to Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) code of ethics.
- Adhere to National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) Model Standards of Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
- Apply the knowledge gained through the pharmacy technician academic setting to actual practice situations.
- Become familiar and build on the professional judgement instilled throughout the pharmacy technician program.
- Working under the direct supervision of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician:
- Package and prepare medications for release to pharmacist or pharmacy technician for final verification.
- Use pharmacy automation equipment to prepare and dispense medications.
- Replenish stock in clinical areas.
- Receive medication stock, ensure medications are handled and stored safely and maintain optimal inventory control to prevent over or under stocking to reduce waste.
- Monitor for drug shortages and inform Pharmacy Supervisor in case of any shortages identified.
- Accurately maintain all documentation as per department and hospital SOPs and policies.
- Preparing medications in compliance with the pharmacy SOPs, before release to the pharmacist or pharmacy technician for final verification
- Deliver medications to clinical areas.
- Return unused medications to pharmacy, sort and process reusable medication.
- Assisting in the delivery of controlled substances with a designated health care professional.
- Assisting in medication deliveries to patient care areas.
- Answer phone calls to assist staff and clinicians in their queries.
- Fill medication trays.
- Prepare medications which require sterile and non-sterile compounding.
- Collaborate with other staff both within and outside the pharmacy department to facilitate timely and safe patient care.
- Assist pharmacy technicians in their duties assigned by the manager or supervisor.
- Collect and document best possible medication histories.
- Perform final product technical verification.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
