Role Description

GeoMate is looking for a motivated and experienced Software Engineer – Backend & Platform to join our growing engineering team. This full-time position is based in our Waterloo office and offers an exciting opportunity to work on the core software platform behind GeoMate's AI-powered products and customer solutions. You will work closely with our CTO, AI engineers, and GIS developers to design and build scalable backend services, cloud infrastructure, APIs, and internal engineering tools. This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants to have a direct impact on the architecture of a growing technology company.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications and cloud services. Build and maintain RESTful APIs supporting GeoMate's products and customer solutions. Design and optimize PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases for large-scale geospatial applications. Develop cloud-native services using AWS and containerized environments. Improve system performance, reliability, security, and scalability. Build authentication, authorization, licensing, and user management services. Collaborate closely with AI, GIS, and software engineering teams on new product development. Contribute to DevOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation. Review code, promote engineering best practices, and provide technical guidance to junior developers and co-op students. Work closely with the CTO on software architecture and long-term platform development.

QualificationsRequired

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum 4 years of professional backend software development experience. Strong proficiency in Python and modern backend frameworks (FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar). Experience designing RESTful APIs and scalable backend systems. Experience with PostgreSQL (PostGIS is considered an asset). Experience with AWS cloud services. Experience using Docker and Git. Strong understanding of software architecture and system design. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup environment.

Assets

Experience with geospatial technologies or GIS software. Experience working with cloud-native architectures. Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices. Familiarity with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes. Experience developing enterprise SaaS platforms.
