About the role
Established in 1917, the Workers’ Compensation Board (WorkSafeBC) is an independent statutory corporation responsible for administering the Workers Compensation Act . WorkSafeBC is an administrative tribunal with the legal authority to enforce occupational health and safety standards, administer compensation and health care benefits for injured and deceased workers and to assess and collect from employers the amounts necessary to fund the workers compensation system. In carrying out its mandate, WorkSafeBC works with workers and employers to promote the prevention of workplace injury and to provide compensation and support to workers in their recovery, rehabilitation, and safe return to work. It provides coverage to over 2.4 million workers and more than 245,000 registered employers throughout BC.
Due to an internal promotion, WorkSafeBC is now seeking a new Associate General Counsel. Reporting to the Head of Law and Policy and General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel will provide leadership across a broad portfolio of legal services while overseeing a team of approximately 35. This role includes providing senior level business law, statutory interpretation, and governance legal advice to senior management across the operating divisions. The Associate General Counsel will also have responsibility for facilitating WorkSafeBC’s compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and for the department holding written hearings into prohibited actions related to workers who exercise of occupational health and safety rights. The Associate General Counsel will help ensure WorkSafeBC continues to provide responsive, solutions-focused legal services that align with organizational priorities and uphold public confidence in its governance. The role also acts as a delegate for the General Counsel in General Counsel’s absence.
The ideal candidate is a strong business-focused business lawyer with proven experience managing legal teams in complex organizations. Familiarity and understanding of the broader public sector context, the legal issues related to the administration of the Workers Compensation Act or other statutory framework, and/or governance and would be beneficial. The Associate General Counsel will demonstrate excellent judgment, the ability to build credibility quickly with senior management, and a collaborative, business-focused approach. This leader will be skilled at mentoring and developing team members to enhance their legal expertise and business acumen, while fostering strong relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders.

In accordance with BC’s Pay Transparency Act, the expected base salary range for this role is $202,481-235,000 plus benefits but may vary based on the successful candidate.
