The Opportunity This role involves working closely with the Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief of Staff, Baycrest Terraces Physician Team, Clinical Director and Multidisciplinary team to ensure the highest standard of medical care, support quality improvement initiatives, and uphold compliance with Retirement Home Regulatory Authority (RHRA) regulations. In tandem the Medical Director would embrace the Baycrest Vision of a world where every older person lives with purpose, fulfilment and dignity and the Mission of advancing aging-related cognitive, emotional and physical wellbeing as an exemplary health care and residential provider for older persons. The Medical Director will partner in the Baycrest’s Mission to transform research, care, innovation and education in aging and brain health.
Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Oversight:
-
Provide strategic medical leadership to ensure the delivery of exceptional, resident-centered care across assisted living, memory care, and independent supportive living communities
-
In collaboration with Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine, will oversee medical aspects of resident care plans, including assessments, treatments, and preventive health measures.
-
Medical direction of the operations of the on-site primary care clinic, ensuring it meets the health needs of residents through timely consultations, diagnostics, and follow-up care.

In collaboration with the Clinical Care Director, will develop and implement clinical protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain high standards of care, compliance with regulatory requirements (RHRA) and best practices

In collaboration with the Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine, monitor and evaluate the quality of medical services, performance reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance resident outcomes and safety

Team Collaboration and Supervision:
-
Collaborate with the Clinical Care Director to align medical and clinical operations, fostering a multidisciplinary approach.

In collaboration with Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine, will supervise and mentor the primary care physicians, providing guidance on complex cases, professional development, and adherence to ethical standards.

In collaboration with Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine, participate in recruitment, onboarding, and training of medical personnel to build a skilled and cohesive team.

Co-ordinate communications, obtain physician feedback on issues/changes that may impact physician practices and workflow.

Advises and supports physician team on complex resident cases if requested
-
Coordinates and chairs physician meetings quarterly.

Meet with Clinical Care Director monthly.

Promote health education and wellness programs for residents, families, and staff to enhance overall community health in collaboration with the clinical care director.

Partner with Clinical Director on Program Resource Decisions: e.g. model change ideas to improve efficiencies, quality and safety.

Education and Scholarship:
-
Collaborate with Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine and Education leads in sustaining the Terraces as a welcoming learning environment for medical students and post-graduate trainees.
-
In collaboration with Baycrest’s Chief of Family and Community Medicine, facilitate hiring of medical staff who will actively participate in Baycrest’s academic activities, including education, quality improvement, creative professional activities and research.
-
Ensure that all hired physicians are eligible for academic appointment within the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Temerty Medicine, University of Toronto.

Participate and support research in collaboration with the Department of Medical Affairs, Baycrest, the Baycrest Academy of Research and Education and the department of Family and Community Medicine, Temerty Medicine, University of Toronto.

Expansion and Development Involvement:
-
Contribute to the planning and execution of residential expansion projects, including the design and implementation of medical services in Terraces 2 and its integrated health care center.

Advise on infrastructure needs for medical operations, such as clinic setup, equipment procurement, and integration of health technologies to support scalable, high-quality care.

Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Safety, Risk Management:
-
Ensure full compliance with all relevant health care regulations, licensing requirements, and accreditation standards for retirement homes.

Manage medical documentation, reporting, and incident investigations, working with the Clinical Care Director to address any compliance gaps.
-
Provide leadership support and in-person medical rounds by Baycrest Terraces Physician Team and manage on-call and vacation coverage to maintain continuous medical care for residents.

Provide medical leadership and co-lead reviews of potential Serious Safety Events with Clinical Director.
-
Provide advice to the Clinical Director on critical issues that may pertain to resident and staff risk.
-
Provide support and review of Policy Development and Revision in partnership with the Terraces Quality Committee.
-
Actively participate in inspections and accreditation surveys, responding to clinical queries and ensuring regulatory compliance.In collaboration with the Clinical Care Director, engage in quality improvement initiatives promoting a culture of quality and safety.
Qualifications
- Medical practitioner licensed to practice in Ontario and a member in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
- Eligible for academic appointment within the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
- Hold a credentialing appointment at Baycrest.
- Strong understanding of regulatory standards, with experience in quality improvement and interdisciplinary team collaboration.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and engage meaningfully with residents, families, and the care team.
Compensation for this Medical Director role is provided through a stipend. The stipend amount will be aligned with the expected deliverables and may vary based on experience and time requirements.
