About the program/department/team

TMU Housing & Residence Life maintains an extensive Residence Life program. It is the hope of the Residence Life program to support students in all aspects of their lives while living in Residence. Our ultimate goal is to create a community in which students can live and learn in a safe and supportive environment.

The opportunity

As a key member of the Residence Management Team, the Residence Life Manager will oversee the development and delivery of residence life and education programs and activities conducted by Residence Advisors, under the direction of the Associate Director. The successful candidate will manage Residence Advisor (RA), Community Leader (CL), and Graduate Advisor (GA) hiring, training, performance and development. They will engage with campus stakeholders on the development and implementation of programs and activities to ensure residence specific initiatives occur to build strong residence communities. Additionally, the successful candidate will manage residence community crisis situations, ensuring prompt response and necessary escalations, while on site and during on-call rotation.

This position requires the incumbent to live in residence, and directly manages a group of live-in student staff members.

Compensation includes the use of a two-bedroom apartment within residence and additional pay for on-call (see MAC and Non-Union Premium Pay Schedule). This is a contract position with an end date of June 1, 2026.

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary degree in a related field.

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience developing and troubleshooting residence programs for housing students, coordinating activities, planning events in an educational setting.

  • Experience supervising student staff within a post-secondary residence setting, preferably in a unionized environment.

  • Experience responding to emergencies, crises and/or students in distress.

  • Experience supervising staff in a unionized environment.

  • Knowledge of student development theories and/or adult learning theories in order to develop and troubleshoot residence programs.

  • Knowledge of and understanding about student demographics and student needs related to students accessing and persisting in postsecondary education in a Canadian setting.

  • Skills in project management, prioritization, and managing multiple projects.

  • Advanced critical thinking skills and adaptability to coordinate and participate in managing a 24/7 environment.

  • Skills in budgeting and forecasting related to program development and implementation.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and deal with conflict;

  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills;

  • Ability to work in a team or independently.

  • Certification(s) in mental health intervention (including but not limited to Mental Health First Aid, Applied Suicide Skills Intervention Training) is required.

  • The successful candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Reference Check.

  • This position requires the incumbent to live and work in an assigned residence on campus and may occasionally need to deal with difficult students and/or situations.

  • Participate in an On-Call rotation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

  • Requirement to live on campus, within residence.

  • Willingness to work frequent irregular hours including weekends and evenings

  • The position requires the employee to perform their duties in person on campus
