JOB SUMMARY
As a Camp Leader you will be responsible for leading, engaging and implementing nature programs and adventure experiences for children and youth in a small group setting. Camp Leaders are expected to use the mountain as a playground – inspiring campers to get outdoors, connect with nature, make friends and experience activities only available at Grouse Mountain. With direction from the Adventure Camp Supervisory Team, Camp Leaders are expected to follow posted activity schedules and provide appropriate supervision and instruction to each camper in their assigned groups.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for orchestrating captivating nature programs and adventurous experiences for youth in small group settings with children ranging from 5-14 years old
- Ensuring activity schedules are followed, providing appropriate supervision and instruction to each camper in your assigned group
- Adapting to, supporting and effectively handling changes, learning opportunities and challenges with resilience and creativity – inspiring campers to embrace new experiences and grow both individually and with their peers
- Ensuring campers’ well-being, encouraging fun and rewarding experiences
- Maintaining knowledge and awareness of safety guidelines associated with camp and all program areas and ensuring guidelines are upheld – including but not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and knowledge of their whereabouts at all times
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including daily attendance, incident reports and activity feedback
- Assist in operational responsibilities of relevant kids’ programs including but not limited to registration process, lunch and snack services and upkeep of outdoor activity areas
- Arriving fit for work and taking proactive responsibility for your personal health and safety
- Other duties as required
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position reports directly to the Mountain Adventures supervisors/managers with no direct supervisory responsibilities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
- Successful completion of secondary school preferred, or combined experience with child care and outdoor activities
- Leaders are expected to be available for entirety of contract (June 22nd - September 4th), must be available for in-person training the week of June 22nd to 26th.
- Previous experience leading groups, public speaking or tour guiding required
- Have the ability to communicate effectively with teammates, leaders and both adult and child guests in group and individual settings
- A reliable self-starter who can work with minimal supervision
- Able to work in inclement weather and an alpine environment
- Fluent in all aspects of English language (both spoken and written)
- Demonstrated interest in one of the following fields; Education, Child and Youth Care, Biology, Earth and Ocean Sciences, Conservation, Nature School
- Successful criminal record check
WORKING CONDITIONS
Hours of Operation are weather dependent. Due to the nature of the business, this position requires flexibility in terms of your work schedule. Shifts require standing for long periods of time, lifting, twisting, and other forms of manual tasks which may have to be conducted outside in all weather conditions.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$18.86 to $22.06 hourly
