Applications are invited for the regular position of part-time Lab Technologist, in the School of Environment & Horticulture Division. The starting salary is $27.96/hr for an 18 hour work week, 9 months per year beginning in late August to late April. Additional hours may be required at peak times during the year such as start or end of term. The position is located at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, School of Environment & Horticulture, the successful candidate is responsible for the setup and take-down of academic lab settings in the School of Environment and Horticulture. The Lab Technologist plays a key role in the coordination, scheduling, and maintenance of the various technical components of the lab. The incumbent provides support and guidance to faculty and students for labs, field work, and projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Aid in the delivery of practical courses by monitoring for safe practices and equipment use
  • Set out all lab and safety equipment and supplies
  • Prepare required standards, solutions, and reagents
  • Calibrate, maintain, and repair equipment
  • Assist with lab clean-up and glassware washing
  • Assist in the maintenance of the comprehensive inventory for all supplies and equipment
  • Train, coordinate, and support student employees in lab-related duties; update duty checklists
  • Prepare media for and maintain microbiological and plant tissue culture stocks
  • Follow, update, and create Standard Operating Procedures
  • Manage Health & Safety requirements for lab chemicals, hazardous materials, etc., per applicable regulatory requirements
  • Provide feedback to faculty on labs for continual improvement
  • Perform equipment or process demos for staff and students
  • Assist professors on research projects that involve laboratory use and monitoring

Qualifications:

  • Two (2) year diploma in Environmental Technician/Technologist, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or similar field of study
  • Minimum of one (1) year practical experience in an environmental lab/field setting
  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining specialized equipment such as an ion chromatograph, an atomic absorption spectrometer, microscopes, water quality equipment, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading, guiding, and/ or coaching
  • The ability to analyze situations, identify hazards, and develop safe solutions as they arise
  • Capability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and maintain accurate records
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Superb communication and collaboration skills
