Test Engineering Designer, New Product Development (CMP)

Position Overview As a Test Engineering Designer , you will play a multi-functional role in designing, building, and executing simulation and physical test setups for equipment prototypes. You will also be responsible for collecting test data, analyzing the results, and presenting findings and recommendations in an organized and concise format. In this role, you will work closely with sales applications, engineering, product management, project management, plant operations, and customers.
Most tests will focus on new product prototypes. From time to time, you may also support food product testing on mature equipment for sales application sizing and specification purposes. This role requires a hands-on approach, strong technical expertise, and a passion for innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop test procedures, protocols, and setups for validating industrial new food processing equipment.
- Conduct performance, reliability, and safety testing in accordance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Lead simulation and real-application equipment testing.
- Analyze test results, identify issues, and collaborate with the engineering team to refine designs.
- Develop and implement test instrumentations, sensors, and data acquisition methodologies.
- Creating 2D and 3D models and drawings with the use of AutoCAD and AutoCAD Inventor.
- Document test plans, results, and recommendations for prototype improvement and for sales applications engineering.
- Collaborate with engineering on root cause analysis and troubleshooting of equipment performance issues.
- Work with cross-functional teams to integrate test findings into final product designs.
- Support the Shop Foreman with intended fabrication details/methods on test rigs and prototypes.
- Communicate and work with stakeholders from FPS’ international offices.
Additional Responsibilities
- Contribute to overall business goals and departmental objectives.
- Support innovation through the design of new parts and equipment.
- Assist sales applications with quick, test-based evaluations.
- Develop and maintain test documentation templates and standards.
- Participate in fostering a positive and collaborative team culture.
- Prepare product samples for testing.
- Set up, clean, and sanitize equipment before and after tests.
- Record equipment settings and document test results.
- Collaborate on creating SOPs for maintenance and cleaning of innovation center equipment.
- Provide basic support on PLC programs and assist controls staff as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 2+ years of relevant experience in test engineering, product development, or prototyping (preferably in the food processing, automation, or manufacturing sector).
- Experience with hands-on mechanical assembly, instrumentation, and troubleshooting.
- Background in both simulation and physical testing is highly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with CAD tools, especially AutoCAD and AutoCAD Inventor (2D and 3D modeling).
- Experience designing and building test rigs and prototypes.
- Strong understanding of data acquisition systems, sensors, and instrumentation.
- Familiarity with PLCs, industrial control systems, and their testing is an asset.
- Ability to conduct root cause analysis and failure mode analysis.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical safety standards and compliance.
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive.
- Comfortable presenting technical results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
